Leaf Springs

I just recently noticed that my right side leaf springs creek or squeak every time I get in or out of my truck. Should I worry about them or is that just an age thing?

 

No biggie. you can grease between the leafs though to help get rid of some of the noise.

 

I'll try and find you the part number. I just ordered the parts for the rear spring sqeak TSB that was updated August 2009. There's a new set of spring pads that go between each of the leafs. These are already included on the newer Tacoma's that started being produced I think with the 2008 model year. The pads are self lubricating and eliminate the squeak. Grease and stuff was the origional fix however it only lasts for a while and the practice was discontinued by Toyota.

The part is $22 for a three leaf setup. If you have 4 leaf's then you have to get two of the same part number.

 

I don't think the 2008's were included or at least the tsb springs they put on mine because mine squeak like there's no tomorrow if I don't keep them greased up well.

 

What kind of grease and where do I apply it?

 

The stuff you can get in a tube from home depot or the like.

Jack up the truck(To give your self more room) then use a long screw driver or pry bar to spread the leafs apart. Remove the silencer pads(at the end of each leaf) 4 per a side iirc. clean them off and clean where you removed the pads from. Lube the pads up really well with grease from a stick what would go in a grease gun. I also lube where I put the pads back using popsicle sticks just to be certain I had everything covered. Then put the silencer pads back in the whole and make sure the seat properly. If not then you'll notice a gap between the leafs. Remove the screwdriver or pry bar. Repeat for all 8 and you should be squeak free.

 

The TSB is dated August 13th, 2009 and is for ALL 2005-2009 Tacoma's and was updated to include the 2008-2009 models that were not contained in TSB T-SU012-07.

The new TSB is T-SB-0274-09
The part number is 04009-09104 and was $22.01 from my dealer.

These are different pads than were in the previous TSB as well and do not require the grease as is stated by the previous poster. The TSB specifically states tht technicians should discontinue the use of any type of grease between the silencer pad and spring as the new pad is a self lubricating surface (probably some sort of synthetic pad).

 

Thanks for the info. I guess they put the old silencer pads in my leaf springs when they swapped them out for the 4 leaf pack.

I have an 08 and my leaf springs squeak as well. It is not really a big deal to me so it's not on the top of my list of things to do. however, I will do the fix at some point.

 

Just picked up the parts. They're actually just synthetic disks that replace the existing pads. I'll try and take some photos and post this weekend. Maybe I can do a good enough write up to get a sticky.

 

How did you put them in? Did you unbolt the leaf springs or just pry them apart with a big ass screw driver??

 

What dealer did you get this from? Mine said they dont carry them and would most likely be aftermarket parts....

 

I can pull out my squeeky pads with a big ass screw driver. That's how I grease them up. So if they are about the same size you can just pry the leafs apart. You don't even need to remove the wheel.

 

u don't need to pull the leafs apart. just jack the truck up and there should be enough space between them to get a thin putty knife thing (i think thats what it was) and just spread the grease around like butter. if you want to go all out, u can pull them all apart and spray rustproofing.
