I have seen multiple posts about many people having thier airbag lights come on a few seconds after starting their engines. I just took mine to the dealer and sure enough, it was the "spiral coil" located in the steering column taht everyone talks about. The news that I wanted to share is that it is completely covered by a 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty! It would have been a few hundred dollars if not for the warranty.

It is a defect... mine was over 60,000 miles, so no warantee.. It was the ONLY failure on my '05 that I had to pay for... unless the rear springs that I added air bags to stop bottoming out counts!

Other manufacturers seem to mostly call this item the "clockspring". I wonder why Toyota insists on calling it (albeit accurately) "spiral coil".

They don't - they refer to it as a Spiral Cable. The dealer must have F'ked it up.

I have this sane issue right now. Does anyone know if the air bag will still deploy?

    I have this issue too.

The dealer said it might not deploy, but they couldn't say 100%.

He said it would probably cost around $300.00 to fix, since I'm outside of warranty.

I still haven't fixed it yet. I'm just trying to avoid accidents until I do...

If your air bag light is on your air bags will NOT deploy if you are in an accident the system is shut off.

Just make sure you buckle up. I have a broken spiral cable also, haven't fixed it yet.

Toyota calls it an Airbag Squib, not a clockspring.

Hey i have a 2006 and my light is on. I just got back from the dealer and they confirmed everything on here. I would like to add a couple of things though. The dealer told me %100 that the bags will NOT deploy if the light is on during a collision, however the other side of the coin is that the dealer told me that a power surge or other anomalie like that could deploy the air bags while drivng.

Also i am in canada and the quote i got to fix mine was $450 for the parts and two hours labour at $93 an hour. looking at about $550 for the whole deal
