Carrier Bearing Maintenance?

I searched and searched and did not find the info I'm seeking. Did not see any maint info in the manual about the carrier bearing either. Is it sealed & lubed for life? Anything I can do while underneath greasing the U-joint zerks? It's a 2006 4cyl 2wd automatic access cab. Thx

 

The carrier bearing doesn't need to be serviced. I replaced the one on my 91 toy about a year ago. The bearing was good, but the rubber bushing fell apart. Rancho foreign auto in Moreno valley had one for my truck. Think there is one in compton too.

 

Thanks DD59... since I plan to keep this truck forever, what is involved in replacing the carrier bearing? Can a competent shadetree mechanic do it?

 

You can do it. On mine I just disconnected one side of the drive shaft(diff side). I pulled the one side out since its a 2 piece drive shaft. Unbolted the 2 bolts on the carrier bearing. Then just re-installed. Easy as that. Sometimes you have to pull the whole driveshaft if it doesnt want to come apart. Its really not that hard to do.

 

your truck may last forever but the bearing won't. replaced mine at 22,000. Stock bearings suck ass

 

Maybe its just me but I thought that was called a steady bearing, And I though a carrier bearing was part of the diff.

 

nope, the carrier bearing is the bearing in the middle of the driveshaft

 

Have not had the opportunity to check yet (09 AC) but on previous trucks there is a sliding spline gear where the drive shaft joins the transfer case. While you've got the drive shaft apart for the carrier bearing (also heard it called the steady bearing) put a whack of grease on the spline gear so the shaft goes back and forth easily when shaft speeds up or slows down.

 

How much is the carrier bearing and how do u know if its going bad
