Well, the v6 simply for the power. But if you're just putzing around on dirt roads you won't notice much difference unless you have different suspension setups...

Neither is better... I mean, you would obviously get more power with the V6, but I really doubt a V6 could get somewhere a 4 cyl couldn't.

They both good although V6 gets you more of low end torques.
My major beef with V6's is that they use timing belts instead of chains. Not the case with our v6 it is using timing chain instead of belt.. Thank you Toyota...

The 4 bangers have 4.10 gears and the v6 has 3.73.
I would say a single cab 6 would be optimal. You have the bit of extra power if you need it. Now do you need it thats up to you there are tons of 4 bangers that can go anywhere and have never needed the extra. Alot of times the limiting factor offroad is the driver (not always.)

What kind of offroading are you talking about?

If you're crawling over obstacles/rocks and using 4lo range primarily for most of your offroading - then you don't need power. You need torque/gearing.

If you're doing a lot of mud holes (and maybe even SAND) and you're using primarily 4hi range - then you'll probably want more power.

For basic dirt roads - I'd think either one is fine.

My vote is for the v6 TRD Off Road model. It has A-TRAC and a locking rear differential. The A-TRAC feature is most impressive.

The TRD Off Road costs a lot more, but if you intend to Off Road, its worth it IMO.

Also, for you guys with 4x4 standard cab 09-10. There is a "Yellow Wire Mod" to enable TRAC while in 4 Lo.

Like other's have said... it depends what your doing.

However I do disagree that having less power doesn't matter. Having power is never a BAD thing. You might get away without it... but having "excessive" power on tap is always a good thing. You can do stuff with gearing to "gain extra power"... but if you already have the power the gearing becomes less prevalent. It's a balance and each setup would be unique.

That said, straight out the door from Toyota, the TRD Off-Road (double or access cab) is probably the most capable, if nothing more than because it has the e-locker. You can build any of the trucks to be extremely capable, but the v6 has more power enhancement kits out (note, kits). URD's kit will put down 420hp... if you're out in the dunes that'd be damn fun, damn fun indeed.

Wouldnt an automatic transmission almost negate the gear argument? If a driver of an auto knows what he is doing he has infinate gears to work with doesnt he?

I have a 76 Bronco with 4:56 gears, 35s, and an auto transmission. It can crawl or it can sling mud pretty well. It has a fuel injected 5.0 H.O. I took out of a 93 Stang with a E303 cam and locked in both ends. I have yet to see the guys with the manuals out crawl my rig when comparable equipt otherwise.

I call BS on the whole V6 being better. You can only get a V6 in a Access Cab or Double Cab. Add the extra engine weight to the AC or DC, and that "extra" power is a huge

gearing is gearing - regardless of the transmission. you're gears only go so low.
