There are a few replies in here of him being paranoid, but the way I see it is, it's just for peace of mind. I too would worry about someone stealing my truck and having to go through the motions of having to get to my destination as well as getting home. I don't know about you, but that would ruin my vacation/road trip.

And I agree with finding a fuse that will disable the truck. I used to always pull my starter fuse on my old car when I had to park in a sketchy area.

i am a 01 camry with a blown engine on my trailer right now i wish sum1 would steal. but they would prooly drop the car off and take the trailer that has no insurance. but i think a starter fuse or battery cutoff is the easiest solution

I learned along time ago if you spend an extra $20 a night and stay in a real hotel there is very rarely any problems.

I thought you couldn't start the newer trucks without having the key b/c of the chip inside? Although I'm figuring if a thief really wants your truck they'll get it regardless, car thiefs tend to be crafty bastards.

Not quite up to paranoia YET.....That spotting scope set up in the front window of my house is for watching the deer not looking for black helicopters. :D

Mine is the plain jane Taco without the crusted diamond exterior btw. It is only 30 days old though and I am starting to like it.

Lucky you. On a road trip through Ca a few years back, I lost all my belonging from my car while I it was in a mall parking lot. Some guy with a slimjim ruined my day and trip while I was inside for 15 minutes.

My undercover bed cover will hide the stuff in the bed but I guess it would take someone all of about 30 seconds to get in if they wanted to.

Bottom line is......no sense in making to too easy for the scum bags.

Just brainstorming here... use "The Club." Remove a wheel/somehow disable the truck yourself in a first sight, real obvious kind of way. Completely remove a battery cable, don't just disconnect it. Get one of those red blinky LED lights for the dash. The dog idea is a good one. Or you could put on some old crappy parts so your rig does not look so tasty. LOL this is getting funny crazy

I just picked up a Toyota bed mat for my tacoma at the dealer today. Nice quality mat btw. I asked one of the folks there about this issue and the first thing out of his mouth was....pull the 10amp efi breaker.....

This sounds like the answer till I can get a kill switch installed.

Really? My truck is an 05, I had my key in my pocket all day while boating and went to use it and nothing, the motor would just crank. Was pissed, and finally a random guy at the boat ramp told me he had a similar issue on his truck (Tacoma) and that I needed to get a new key or a spare, sure enough got the extra key and all was good.

Realistically though if someone wants your stuff they're gonna get it regardless. Even the club isn't going to help if its a thief that knows what they're doing.

Odds are, you dont have to worry about the truck disappearing. It's stuff inside it.

It's a lot easier to smash and grab, than steal your truck.

I have already learned my lesson about leaving anything interesting visible.

As far as personal possessions in a rig being insured.....they are as long as you have renter's or homeowner's insurance. Your auto policy does not apply here.

BTW......thanks for all the ideas folks.

    Good luck,

    Nice reply ;)
Sorry about your stuff being snatched. Honestly, you're lucky the guy used a slim jim. Most just break a window.

Like most have said, a thief will do what he needs to win. i mean, sure, do whatever you want. I grew up in CA, lived in Philly, Detroit, LA, and never had a problem.

Course, with a car that's 30 days old, I think you're allowed to baby it for a little while longer!

you could always disconnect the positive and negative battery terminals...and if that doesn't it do it for you you can always remove the battery and lug it into your hotel room...

I bought my truck from Mcminnville Toyota (45 min. north of portland)...best part about about it...no sales tax in Oregon...:D

nice 2 day road trip with my dad back to vegas...after 10 hours or so over driving spent the night in roseville, sacramento...then drove the rest of the way to las vegas the next day...all down hill...
