Keep my 07 2WD PreRunner or get a new 2010 4WD TRD OR

I have a 2007 2WD PreRunner AC that has served me well for on-road driving, but I'm looking at trading it in for a new 2010 4WD TRD OR DC.

While 90% of my driving is on road, I do a lot of outdoor activities that take me onto dirt which turns into mud in the rain. Plus, my brother is an avid off roader/rock crawler who tries to get me to off road my Tacoma with his rebuilt Jeep. Haven't taken him up on it yet because mine's 2WD with an open differential.

Also, while the Access Cab fits my needs now (and it's halfway paid off), the Double Cab looks a lot better for kids which my wife and I plan to have in a couple years.

I kind of regretted the 2WD purchase as soon as I made it, and I don't want to make that mistake again. If I end up trading mine in, I plan to keep the new truck until it dies.

Anyway, the new Tacomas offers a lot of features over my 07. On the off road side, the auto-LSD looks pretty effective, especially when coupled with 4WD (the front wheels have the auto-LSD too right?), and the rear locker on the TRD OR is attractive. As for the interior, the compass/temp gauge, backup camera, stereo aux input, etc offer a lot over the relatively basic 07.

I've been to two dealerships and neither had any 4WD models with the TRD OR package. Apparently that's not a very common configuration in Texas, so it looks like I'm going to have to pay a pretty penny for it as they would barely budge on the price at all. However, there is one more dealership in town that has a couple, so maybe they can play ball. Used 4WD TRD OR models are also extremely rare in my area. The closest ones were several hours away.

There are several non-TRD 4WDs in the area, and I wonder if the auto-LSD negates the usefulness of the OR's locking differential. I guess I could always add a rear locker to the PreRunner later if I feel the need (but then I'd lose the upgraded suspension).

I figure my options are to go all out on the TRD OR, save some money and buy the 4WD PreRunner, or save a lot of money and keep my 07 and install an ARB rear locker for my off road needs.

I appreciate any suggestions.

You should just wait. Or if you can afford it trade it in. Find a Broker they'll get you exactly what you want.

Way cheaper to just beat us a beater. I have the same deal as you, 2wd Prerunner Offroad, now i have a choice of 83 yota 4x4 for $900 or 1990 125 2 stroke dirt bike.
My current Tacoma is a standard PreRunner Access Cab with open differential.

I've been kinda in the same boat. Honestly, if I wasn't so far upside-down right now I'd trade it for a D-Cab BSP TRD Off-Road 4x4 in a heart beat. However, if you can negotiate on a 4x4 sport and save yourself over 2.5k in negotiations you won't get with the off-road... then you could just put an ARB air locker on it for what you saved... then you got colormatched and locked....

Also.. there is no 4wd PreRunner.

I say it's a catch 22.. depends on a lot of factors? how much you owe on your current? You gonna trade it in, or private sell?
I was in a similar boat you are in.. had a '99 pre-runner OR. had it all paid up, BUT... kids were in the not so-distant future, had 150,000 miles on it, AND.. had my eye on the double-cab long beds.. A co-worker needed to sell his 1-year old '07 pre-runner sport d-cab long bed.. sold my truck in 3 days, and picked his up for a great price..

Love my d-cab, but could have "made it work" with the extended cab with my now 1 year old.. loved the rear locker on the '99 OR.. (sport has the LSD)...
Even with about 9 left on this truck, the "no payment" was VERY nice...

Case and point.. I don't know...lol.. but atleast I got you thinking..

I am in the same boat as well. I have a 07 DC prerunner TRD Sport and I am thinking about trading it in on a 2010 DC 4X4 TRD sport. I regret being talked into a 2WD with out driving the 4X4. My truck is also half way paid off but 4X4 sure would be fun and handy at my fishing spots! Man i'm iching for it!

I owe $13000, and would trade it. You can deduct trade-ins from the sales price WRT sales tax in Texas.

Do the TRD Sport models have a mechanical LSD or just the auto-LSD that comes standard now?

Just an update, I went for the trade (well my other truck totalled out and I got a 4x4 doublecab like you were looking, TRD Off-Road). Yea, it's worth it.

TRD OR 4x4 certainly gets my vote. Too bad it doesn't come in a DC LB w/6 speed manual & OR package. Cmon Toyota.. sheesh

I tell all my friends to get a 4x4 over 2x4.
Just as soon as you get the 2x4, you will need 4x4 and reget it. Just IMO.

Yea, usually a truck is more useful than a piece of wood.

Kind of out the point, but not really.

It is kind of like buying a v-6 mustang, why.
The heritage of the mustang is horsepower From the v-8, IMO.
This is in relation to the old school Toyota trucks. When I think of those I think of 4x4, 22re solid front axle.
Just IMO

Keep your 2WD for now. The new 3rd Gen will come out very soon and you should snag one of those!

I have to assume the OP has already made his decision, since this thread/poll was originally started last April.

But, for what it's worth: so long as I can afford it, I will ALWAYS buy 4x4.
