Rear Locker

I have an 2008 Tacoma with a limited slip rear end. Am i going to have to change the rear end to make it where it will lock or is there something toyota can add to the electronic to make it lock. I know i have a place on the dash for the factory axle lock button but it is not there. You have to pay extra for that. Now i wish i did but do you guy's have any ideas. I was hoping that the rear end was already set up for the locker but with my luck i will probably have to change the rear end.

 

If you want a toyota e-locker, you will need to swap out the rear ends, plus, plus. Big job. Or, you can just install an ARB Locker, and you will end up with a selectable locker with a stronger rear end then the factory e-locker. And, thru the end of month, if you buy a ARB locker you will recieve a air compressor for free.

 

ARB is probably best way to go as somebody mentioned, but why do you need to change it? Whats wrong with LSD?

I was however helping, this is a well talked about topic and the OP seems to know very little about the subject. I was just pointing him in the right direction for some info before getting another thread into one that his questions probably have already been answered.

Keep the LSD.

If you want/need a locker..... put an ARB in the front and have the best of both worlds.

 

To the OP, while my solution may seem drastic to you, consider the options of trading your truck for a 2009 or 2010 4x4 with the TRD Off Road package.

You will get your factory rear locker, and to boot you will have A-TRAC. With those tools in the bag it is difficult to get stuck. If there is traction to be had, even if it's only one wheel you will get free.

You can grenade your CV's turning too tightly in 4WD without a locker.

Using a locker in the front - no matter what axle you have, you've gotta use it wisely and responsibly. The one thing everyone should know about having lockers in the front, is you can't turn tight with them.

You really shouldn't be using a front locker unless you really need it.

 

wish i had the 800+ for an ARB rear locker...

 

Not necessarily for the OP (since he's from Texas) - but for people who live in the snow belt need the mechanical LSD for the daily driving in the winter.

It was just an 'option' for the OP to think about. Not knowing what types of trails he does - the front locker would probably be fine for most situations. And if he's getting himself into harder trails where the ARB won't be a benefit (based on steering), then its time to think about getting a winch.

Nobody ever said you had to utilize a front ARB in every situation. If you're in a situation where you could blow the axles, then pull cable and move on.

Personally for me, I like having the mechanical LSD for the winter.
