oil change

went to get my oil changed in my truck it has 3800 miles on it . the dealer told me that the 2010 have synth oil and dont need changed until it has 10000 miles on it. anyone here this seems like alot of miles to me.

 

I would change it every 5000 miles, synthetic or not.

 

They also said toyota was going to send an up date for the manual

i am doing my first change at 1000 miles, i don't care what's in it

thereafter, i'll know what's in it, and i can manage the change intervals my own bad self

 

I do them at the old 3k interval.. guess I just can't believe/trust that it's safe to push it to 5k. BI use good plain ole regular 10W30 oil. It got me well over 200K on my 88 4x4 Toyota, and I got 250K on my 84 Subaru. Sold em both in good running order, lots of life left.

 

3500 or 6 months, whichever comes first for me.

 

I do mine at 5k...oil still looks tea colored. All of the honest Toyota service techs say 5k change it. Anything else is yesterdays newpaper. For what its worth....

10000 is too much, even for synthetic imo. Especially for the first oil change. After regular intervals and monitoring the oil protection through blackstone and constant level monitoring you could push it to 10k but... why. Oil is relatively cheap.

My friend leased a BMW 3-Series with the bmw maintenance thing. They refused to do the oil change until 10k. At 8800mi, it ran low enough to trip the light. BMW ate the cost of engine damage...

 

I have heard that they were shipping with synthetic after an in factory break-in oil change, but I haven't heard of a recommended oil change interval of 10K miles from day 1. That is interesting, if true. I suspect the factory recommended oil change interval is still 5K miles though, as I couldn't validate the 10K mile interval anywhere on the net.

I read somewhere that the factory does the engine break-in before it is installed into a vehicle, then the break-in oil is removed and replaced with synthetic. That's why the initial oil change interval starts at 5K miles.

Synthetics are great, and I highly recommend using them from day 1. There are a lot of options though, from pure synthetic to synthetic blends and the detergent additives vary greatly. Some vehicles, GM for one, employ diagnostics to analyze the condition of the oil to indicate to the owner electronically when to change the oil.

IMHO, you can extend the oil change interval quite a bit using a pure synthetic oil without affecting the life of your engine. That is of course assuming normal driving on paved roads. A lot has been written about the properties and benefits of synthetics. To me, the greatest benefits are cold weather start protection and much slower breakdown of the oil's lubricating properties. With the right kind of filtration, one could get away with only changing the filter and one quart of makeup oil at a change interval. However, if you want to keep your new warranty, you'd better follow the manufacturer's guidelines.

In that respect, I use Mobil 1 for the peace of mind that, should I get too busy to change the oil on time, there's not going to be any drama over possible damage.

 

I change mine myself every 5k miles or so.

But I will just stick with mobile 1 5k changes.

 

If Toyota is putting synth oil in at the factory, why does the dealer use dino when they do the oil changes (at least that's the case at my dealership.) Also, isn't the "genuine Toyota oil" that the dealers sell dino?

 

My dealership, with my Prius, will use Mobil 1 if you ask. It does cost more though. They seemed to be trying to hint to me without actually saying it that the "genuine Toyota oil" is synthetic. However, since it is not priced like a synthetic, it is likely Dino oil, although it could have a light blend of synthetic in it. I stuck with my Mobil 1.

I plan on keeping my vehicles a long time.

 

If it shipped with 0W-20, Toyota is now certifying it for a 10K OCI interval for normal driving and 5K OCI for severe.

Just received the updated warranty and maintenance guide for my 2010 FJ and that is what is in the guide now. Also has a note if you use 5W-20 or other weight mineral oil, to do 5K OCI's regardless.

$54 Toyota 0W-20 oil Toyota/ exxon mobil Case of 6 Quarts Full Synthetic TGMO SN 0W-20 Oil

Toyota 0W-20 oil. BTW, that oil is very stout and very capable of going 10k.

 

What would you consider a quality oil filter? I've used Mobile 1, Quaker State (in an old Dodge Ram) and Amsoil oil, but just a regular FRAM oil filter.

 

Do they sell a braided oil conversion kit for my 2003 trd?

I am 60 yrs old and don't want to pay for such expensive service every 5k,when I can put better oil and filter myself,Thanks

 

If it is a 4-cyl engine, then Toyota just released a bulletin a while ago saying that if you use the right oil you can switch to 10,000 mile intervals. Sadly, no such bulletin for the V6.

In any case, I would still do the FIRST oil change at between 1000 and 3000 miles, just for peace of mind and to switch out to synthetic.

I used to be nervous about "long" oil change intervals, but if you use a quality oil and filter on an engine in good running order then 10,000 miles is no risk at all. I use synthetics and decent filters. After my drivetrain warranty is expired I will do a couple of oil analyses to make sure and then switch to at least a 10,000 mile interval.
