I have heard advantages of having nitrogen in your tires instead of air.Is this a myth or a real advantage for prolonged tire wear? if you need to adjust the pressure are there places that have a tank readily available or is this strictly a tire store service? Thanks...

i have it in my tires. It is supposed to increase mph. I really havnt seen any advantage with it over air actually.

UM Nitrogen in your tires won't make your car any faster. The deal with nitrogen is it doesn't expand and contract with temperature as much as air. Nascar and drag cars use nitrogen in their tires so the pressure wont increase as the race goes on. Therefore having a more constant air pressure allows them to dial the chassis in just right for each track.

    Jeff

And if I am wrong please inform me on how nitrogen in tires makes your car faster?

Sorry but to get back to your original question. Costco (if you have one) services tires with nitrogen.

If you buy tires at Costco they fill them with nitrogen for free.

It may provide a small benefit, but not worth paying extra for. Here is an article.

Never really noticed a difference with my old tires. Been running regular old O2 in my new ones and so far no problems. Also depending on how/where you go wheeling, what happens when you air down and the little gas station near that place you went only has O2 and you have to make a 25mi drive?

x2, nitrogen increases pressure based on temperature slower than O2.

O2 is Oxygen. Something like 78% of our ambient air is already Nitrogen. I doubt anyone is running 100% O2 in their tires.

Well, nobody said anything about nitrogen making your car faster.

The nitrogen molecules are slightly larger than Oxygen and does not leak out as quickly along with said temperature constant. I remember stores that started using it for consumers were pushing better mpg.

There are other threads about this somewhere... The consensus, from what I remember, is that it's not worth paying money. The air in your tires is mostly nitrogen anyway (as stated above), and if you just pay attention to your tire pressure, you can save money. I didn't know that COSTCO would do it for free, though.

NASCAR might find a benefit from the increased tire pressure consistency, but they're running 150mph for hours at a time. I don't think this is a "Jeff Gorduhn uses it in his rig... I shud use it in mihn" situation.

EDIT: I just did a search of thread titles... 15 titles w/ the word 'nitrogen.' Some of them weren't tire-related, but not many.

Considering the fact that 'air' that most people fill there tires with is 78% nitrogen anyway, it isn't going to make much of a difference in a daily driver. Really, the only advatage of nitrogen is the fact that it is dry. Humidity in the air will effect tire pressure more as temperature varies. This is why race teams use it. If you could get completly dry air, it would have the same advantage.

I have Nitrogen in my tires, no real benefit as far as MPG. But what i do notice is after traveling 300 miles i do not see a huge jump in my tire pressure. I can set it to 38psi in each tire and after six months it may go down to 34-36psi. It also seems to help with tire wear since you have a more consistent pressure(just rolled over 43,000 with mine) and increase in the tire longevity. I have never paid for it since the dealership i use to work for has the machine that sucks out the old 02 and replaces it with 98% nitrogen.

The only thing I've noticed is a smoother ride quality. I mean I felt the difference night and day.

Well at least you know if someone is having chest pains or difficulty breathing and have 100% oxygen in their tires, they can pull over and start sucking the O2 out of their tires!!!!:laugh:

"Regular" air, N2, and Co2 Dont expand that much differently than one another. Read this:
    http://www.powertank.com/truth.or.hype/

N2 only has a benafit to race tires, or other tires (such as aircraft), where that little percentage differance can make a difference. Daily driven vehicles wont see any improvment over running "regular" air.

I ran nitrogen in the tires of my Discovery for a long time. Here's one story about nitrogen that I found to be true: Tire pressures fluctuate less with ambient temps.

I'm fussy about tire pressures at the best of times, but the Disco was especially sensitive to rear tire pressure so I checked it often. With air, i would gain or lose about 1 PSI with each 10 degrees of ambient temperature. With nitrogen, they stayed right where they were set when filled.

Well obviously you didn't read the guy i quoted in my post that claimed nitrogen gives you more MPH.

we use it @ the dealership, tires with compressed air have 85% nitrogen anyway.we can raise it to 91% with our nitro machine.i put it in my truck cause its free to me,would i pay for it......NO.it does seem to ride smoother and take bumps better, the only diiference is nitro doesnt expand and the pressure stays the same from cold to hot.
