There is two little I think "Philips" screws one on each end up at the top looking down. You can't take it off because of the wipers but you can flip it up. Maybe you could take it off with some fooling around.

Source of metal. Inside Semi filters is a perforated Stainless steal layer on some. Find a old filter and take it apart.

I have a piece of perforated plastic I bought for a different project. I still have some left over. I think I'm going to use that cause it will be silent. I Picked that up at a plastics supply chain. I think I actually have a piece of SS that I got out of a filter too so if I can find it I may use that instead. The perforated stuff project was a dremel tool bit holder which I built and turned out great. Holds thousands of tips.

I like the mod! Perhaps a expanded/punched metal screen with a bug screen cover would keep all the nasties out. I'll just have to figure out a way to make the bug screen replaceable.
This is on the B mod list. I have to get through the A list first.
I'm also contemplating a cabin air filter replacement using a 3M allergan filter. Unfortunately, that's on the B list too.
Maybe someone can pick up my food for thought and make a meal out of it:)

I also added an aluminum screen attached to a piece of L channel weather striping, I used 2 way loctite tape and twisted on some wire to hold the screen to the underside of the weather strip, then just zip tie to the openings provided, looks like they could of added a filter in that spot. There is tons of extra room under that cover, I may hide a 24 piece tool kit in there.
Here is a pic of mine now...

On toyotanation there was a guy who covered this vent with a solid piece of sheet metal to prevent water from comming into the truck. Guy mentioned that everytime it rained water would come into his truck from this vent. Heres the link:

    http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=339849

Maybe if the mod using the screen and covered with a solid piece of sheet metal would be the best way to address any problems with this vent.

That sounds really familiar for some reason.:D

And I didn't have water coming in each time it rained. It happened once 4 years ago and a second time a few months ago. Parked at the same place at the same angle during a heavy downpour. But I agree that if you're going to the trouble of adding the screen, you should be making the section near the firewall solid with a lip to reduce/eliminate your changes of water coming in from the poor design of the plastic cowl cover.

Is there any way of removing the wipers? We need a how to on how to remove the wipers to have better access to the area under the cowl.

At the base of the wiper blade arm is a cap. Remove the cap gently I think by prying up from the windshield side with a flat blade screwdriver wrapped in tape.. Under the cap is a bolt.

Remember to have the blades parked proper before you undo the bold so putting them back on later correctly will be simple. Or mark the position with a black marker line across the assembly.

The nut on assembly is tightened to 15 ft/lb. Your suppose to clean the cog surfaces with a wire brush before you stick it back together. Don't erase your marks with the wire brush.
