I have what I consider serious frame rust for a 3 yr old truck. I am in WV, but in a low lying county that doesnt usually see harsh winters and alot of road salt. Has anyone else had problems from this year of Tacoma...I was really hoping to drive this truck for a long time (10-15 years), but at this rate it probably has less than 3 yrs left.:(

Mods? What's a mod? Bone stock, baby. Well, okay. Maybe a few smallish mods. If you count a locking gas cap, coin holder and a behind-the-seat trash bag.
This doesn't really help you in your situation--and I'm sorry it isn't helpful--but here's something on the subject for rusty Tacoma's up until the year 2000. (Sorry if this is old news, but I'm a noob here.)

Yeah I hate it, to beat it all, its not like its been offroad, its basically been a comuter to work and back for my wife, and otherwise a great truck....Mostly it is rusting in and around the welds, which is even worse since they are the weakest points to begin with. I'm going to the dealer this weekend with it. I'll post how it turns out.,

Actually, given a good bead, and penatration, the weld is the strongest point.:)

I bought an 05 from Ohio and it has some frame rust. Yours appears to be surface rust mostly. Just get under there with some naval jelly, little bit of sand paper, and some good rustoleum. She'll look brand new after a few hours of work. From the research I've done, a good number of guys have surface rust on their frames from salty road conditions.

That is not serious, it looks like it's only surface rust. Serious is what you would see on an 86 - 88 Toy, where the wheel wells in the bed completely rust through. Anyway, if the dealer doesn't do anything to your satisfaction, look into the following 2 products, Rust Bullet and Por15, which are both rust inhibitors and work excellent!

yep you can wash it all you want and you get that on any truck, not just toyota. That is why I had mine rust proofed. If you don't want rust get it rust proofed...its not toyota's fault that metal rusts.

Mine looks about the same as that...I figure I'll just sand some of it when I get time and grab a can of black rustoleum and spray away

Mine's even worse. Will be undercoating her this summer. but your truck isnt gonna rust out in 3 yrs.

Other trucks of similar age around here also have surface frame/weld rust, just not as bad. If you don't want to undercoat yourself, most shops (stay away from delear) are doing the full deal for $350 around here.

Looks like a good candidate for an undercoating job. I agree its surface rust.

I'm glad to hear Toyota is taking responsibility for the frame rot and buying back trucks.

So... what are they going to do for owners who already got rid of their trucks because they were unsafe to drive? When I brought the issue to a head on my '98 4x4 SR5 extended cab (early 2007), Toyota indicated it was my problem and suggested I didn't wash the truck often enough. It was really sad - the truck was in great shape except for the frame (ready to fail at any minute - you could put a screw driver through several sections nearly top to bottom)! The dealer gave me a low trade-in (about $5000! - I know for a fact they sent it off to auction because of the liability) but Toyota thrwe in $500 to encourage me to buy another Tacoma.

I guess I'll call them and ask. It's just salt in the wound - had I tried to drive an unsafe truck for another year I would have saved $3000-$5000. Doesn't seem right...

I have an 08 tacoma DC and have a little bit of frame rust already. One day I was looking under the hood and noticed that the A/C drain is just above the frame which is not a good thing bacause that part of the frame is always exposed to moisture, also noticed that it started to rust quite a bit on that side. I am extending the hose past the frame hopefully it would help...

That's 150% of the blue book value at the time they buy it back, which would only happen if the frame failed inspection bad enough that they couldn't do anything like simple rust treatments.

It's not the New Truck Lottery...
