WA has a serious lemon law. It definetly gives you time to figure out if your vehicle qualifies. Something like 30K miles or more. I'm going to contact Toyota about this clutch and first gear. The only way I can start once it's warmed up without jerking is to rev it a little, engage the clutch slowly. As soon as it starts to bog, let up on the gas, push the clutch in a little then reapply gas and fully let the clutch out. A person who doesn't know how to do this won't even be able to drive this truck. That's unacceptable. I wanting to get a small boat to tow. I'm dreading how hard it's going to be to start out in first and how much damage the clutch is going to take.

I've got a 2007 4 cyl 5 sp manual reg cab. Very hard shifting in 1st & 2nd when it is cold
outside, below 32 degrees. Seems much better after it warms up and the outside temp
has warmed up. Have changed the tranny fluid but that did not help.
Is this the clutch or tranny?

    thanks

What manual tranny fluid did you use on the change. The hard shift is just that the fluid is thick and cold. Some have had sucess with freeing up the shifter with Amsoil MTG and Redline MT-90.

I used Penzoil the first time and decided to change that oil out hoping
Valvoline would solve the problem. My owners manual says 75-90 weight
which is what I used.......I have a sneeky feeling it's the clutch and the
vehicle only has 50,000mi, but I did buy it used.

    thanks

    Julia,

Try the Redline MT-90, it did a decent job in my old motorcycle with a stiff shifter. Amazon has it for $12.49 a quart with free shipping. It is a true synthetic that is almost clear in color. I know it is about $50, but it may help solve your problem. Have used Valvoline and it is like sludge at cold temps. The Redline is like water in comparison.

Thanks much I'll give it a try.
