Uggh...at it again, need some input.

As some of you know, I've often gone back and forth on whether I should get rid of my truck for either a fullsize or double cab longbed (two biggest complaints with my current truck is bed size and cab size).

I'm at the point now where I have my truck for sale. I'm just REALLY stuck on what direction to go. I thought it would be much easier than this. My truck is paid for, I hate big payments, and ideally, would love to avoid them all together, but given the mileage on my truck as it stands, and what I'm in the market for, I can't avoid payments. One side of me says to go for a double cab long bed since I know these trucks (for the most part) have a proven track record. Then again, I know the cab is still not that big for adults, and the bed is still small. Couple that with the fact that I KNOW I would want to lift the long bed since I don't like how they look stock, then I may be lowering my mpg down to fullsize status.

The newer Tundras, even used, are more $$ which means a little higher payments. Couple that with the fact the the AIP issues everyone seems to be experiencing at $3000-$5000 a pop, I'm not so sure.

I can fall back on the tried and true F-150s, but aside from their looks, they don't do much for me (slow, terrible mpg, and poor towing). I know vehicles are always some sort of compromise, but it's a tough decision. Longevity and usability are key here. My wife told me to get what I want this time around, and be done with it, because she's even tired of hearing me complain about my current setup

do you even need the bed? if not, why not an SUV? just a thought if you do need another truck then i don't know what to tell ya like you said, there's definitely going to be a trade off, you're just going to have to figure out what you want that to be

 

Definitely need the bed (hence the reason for contemplating a fullsize). I've made probably 15 trips to Lowe's since the end of January, and every time I had to borrow my dad's F250.

 

what about buying a bigger, used truck only for the time you really need the big bed??

 

keep the truck and keep borrowing jk. why dont you buy a cheap flat bed trailor or somthing for when you go to lowes

 

I have a double cab with a long bed and love it. I also put a cap on it so basically it fits my needs for everything. I can hold my family (2 kids) and still make a trip to Lowes, grocery, etc and have TONS of space.

Sounds to me like you want a lift but dont want a drop in MPG, you have truck paid off but don't want to take on payments.....well something has to give. You could probably get a used LB/DC to cut cost, but the lift factor is your choice, either looks or MPG.

Honestly, all major "hurdles" aside (mpg, cost, reliability)? An 07+ Tundra.

 

If you have the space then get a semi cheap used truck, that is if you just need something for hauling shit around occasionally. I thought about that but i dont have the room. Same reason I havnt bought a street legal sand rail.

I can deal with a drop in mpg, I just can't predict what a 2.5" lift with 265/75/16s will do. Right now I have that setup without the lift, and get solid 18-19mpg in most conditions. Even if I averaged 16-17 with the lift/tires, I would be happy with the Tacoma Dbl Cab Long Bed given that's what you will be getting in a fullsize.

Looks-wise, the Tacoma has EVERY truck beat out there IMHO.

 

Couple all of this with the fact that I found an 05 Dbl Cab Long Bed Sport 4x4 with Towing package and 40K miles with 7yr/100,000 warranty for $18,900, I was tempted but location and time frame of availability (along with my inability to make a quick decision) most likely makes it a no go.

 

car payments SUCK!!! i would get a used utility trailer and call it good. this of course will not fix the crappy passenger capacity.

 

The cheap "work" truck isn't a bad idea. I have barn to keep it in, but that's reserved for workshop use No matter what, I'm unfortunately not going to be able to buy local since the dealer's here price everything through the roof.

Run the 05 another year or two and bank the cash. Perhaps Toyota will get their head out of their ass and start selling the diesel hilux in the states.

 

Yeah brand new is not an option for me seeing as I'm cheap

I personally love my DC LB...mileage is around 18 in summer 16 in winter with 3 inch lift and 285s driving like grama. I plan on putting the stockers back on for the colder months to help with the mpgs

 

How is it for adults in the back? I've looked at them constantly on dealer lots, but never sat in one. Still looks a little tight.
