Okay sweet! That will save me money on buying an extra 3 quarts. Now I know this may sound dumb but do I need to add any LSD additive (friction modifier) to the transfer case or front diff?

No. Only your rear limited slip diff requires the additive.

No problem. Just remember to service that rear diff every 30,000 miles. More often if you put it under water or do a lot of towing.:)

I just changed mine with Mobil 1 and some LSD additive, forget the label. But I haven't experienced any shudders related to the gears.

Okay since I live in a small town I went to the local auto parts store and they didnt have what I was looking for. They had a bunch of synthetic 75W-90 gear oil and only had one brand of 80W-90 non-synthetic gear oil but the brand was "carquest." I was looking around on ebay and Summit Racings website and found this. Will this oil work for the rear diff and just adding 4oz. of friction modifier?

Not sure, the manual also states the oil should be Hypoid Gear Oil GL5 (API Standards). Ask the seller.

Had a 2007 4x4 that started making the "dreaded" shudder and clunk when turning a corner at about 30k. I changed the fluid with Valvoline synthetic and it got better but still made the noise. Spoke to a buddy of mine and he gave me 2 tubes of the BG friction modifier. Drained out enough to add the modifier and went to the farm. With the steering wheel turned all the way to the right I made about 30 turns. Then, 30 turns with the wheels turned all the way to the left. Just go slow, no need to spin the wheels. This will work the addative into the clutch packs and the nosie should go away. Hope this helps, it worked for me.

Again everyone, thanks for all the great information and taking the time to relate your own experiences. If anyone with a LSD rear diff has any questions after studying this thread, they probably shouldn't be workin on their own junk.
    Props Y'all!

I wouldn't buy the Lucas stuff that's on ebay that you posted earlier. I haven't read very many good things about it. Not necessarily bad, but the Valvoline seems to have a better reputation. And good find at the grocery!! If you've got to resort to buying gear oil online, Amazon has Shell Spirax 80w-90 for $6 a quart and it's supposed to be really good stuff. Check out bobistheoilguy.com for lots of threads about gear oil.

The best stuff out there for our rear ends is Redline. I changed fluid to Royal Purple and after a few months had a terrible clunk when backnig up, i switched to Redline and what do you know, it went away. It is a little hard to find but you can go through JEGS or Summit Racing to get it. i think it runs around 5 dollars a bottle. Good stuff you will not be disappointed.

Ok so here is a quick question, I am running mobil 1 plus additive from toyota and the rear end seams fine. Changed it about 10k back, the rear end is much cooler now with the mobil 1 but now I am thinking I should switch back to dino? If it aint broke don't fix it? Could I be missing the noise?

I think I would take your own advice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If your rear diff isn't chattering, then I wouldn't worry about it. JMO.

I switched out to Redline full synthetic 75W-90 GL-5 Hypoid Gear Oil for LSD in front and rear differentials at 15,000 miles and have had absolutely no problems. I even bought some Redline friction modifier in case I needed it, but never did as the stock Redline for LSD's worked perfectly as-is. No shudder even in tight turns.

No way I would use dino, the Redline full synthetic works great and will outlast and out perform dino.

    Just my two cents.....

What does the chattering sound like? loud noise? Funny how I was happy with the mobil 1 till I read this thread! Don't think I am going to change it but but will listen for any noise now for sure. Funny how that works...
