Why not do the math and figure out where your break even point would be? Base your decision on that.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm also inclined to drive farther for a dealer or seller that is honest and forthcoming, and doesn't play games. I don't know if that matters to you, but I think dealers who (a) give you a good price and (b) are willing to provide information easily and without games being played, deserve my business.

    I'll be honest, I wouldn't drive the 800+ miles.

It's a little too far for if there was a problem, and you're not even supposed to drive at sustained speeds for any length of time till the engine is broken in and that would be alot of highway driving.

I bought mine (refundable deposit) over the phone a month before they got it in stock, so there was no question.

Asheville was one of them, but I didn't even know about Hendersonville. I just looked up their pricing and they are $522 cheaper than Asheville, but Asheville doesn't have a doc fee. Does Hendersonville have a doc fee and if so, what is it? It looks like I may have an option E!

Even 200 miles is a full day off work for me, so subtract your daily wages from the number, plus there's no guarantee you won't find a "problem" at the far-out dealer. "We just sold the truck you were interested in to someone else, how about this more expensive one...." The ability to quickly and easily walk out is a huge negotiating advantage you won't have hundreds of miles away.

Buy it from the dealer you plan on servicing with. More leverage if TSB or warranty work is needed.

i consider my time to be worth at least $20/hour so as long as the time x 20 plus the amount spent on gas is less than $ 1500 i would do it

Hendersonville was just like Asheville with no fees other than the sale price.

I am also in NC and had the same problem. Local dealers didn't want to budge and I even told them I was willing to travel to get it. I ended up getting mine from a dealer in Augusta about 175 miles away last week. They drove it up here for $180 and considering the $1000 difference in price I jumped on the opportunity. You may want to look into having it shipped. :notsure:

Back in the 1960's when Toyota wanted to expand in the USA nationwide, they either did not have the money or wanted to take the risk of investment capital to setup a Toyota owned distributor network. They allowed U.S. owned private distributor networks to be setup that control various states.

These handful of distributors control both the dealer networks in their respective area of control and set prices for these dealers to buy their Toyota's from these distributors. These dealers back then were not tied to corporate Toyota but just a shell with the distributor controlling them.

Fast forward to today, Toyota corporate has bought back most of these early distributors with the exception of two:

Southeast Toyota Distributors controls: GA, FL, NC, SC & AL

Gulf States Toyota Distributors controls: AR, TX, LA, OK & MS

The above two still control the dealer network in those states. Dealers in these states are usually less flexibility when it comes to deals as they have an extra layer to contend with than other states who are run by corporate Toyota.

In essence, there is three separate structures that sells Toyota's in the USA and they do not play well with each other.

I would go to the local dealers where you live and tell them what kind of deal you can get, I bet they would match or beat it.

    Option C is obviously a no-brainer.

For option D, why not fly out on a saturday morning, pick up the truck when you get there, drive back saturday afternoon and sunday? I'd strongly consider that if you trust the dealer, and if you work M-F you don't miss any work. I've done several long distance deals, never had a problem; I've never bought a new vehicle closer than 90 miles from home. Pick out your vehicle and put a down payment on it via CC over the phone, get everything worked out in advance.

I'm in east TN and bought a new car in CA to save ~$3k (after my expenses) and then drove it back ~2200 miles. That's pretty extreme. I bought my tacoma in West Virginia, probably 300 miles.

    TacomaFanNC,
I'm over in Robbinsville,NC and looking to maybe trade my 2002 regular cab in on a 2010 regular cab so I am interested in your findings.

So no dealer fees in Asheville? I am a FL resident so will pay all sales tax, registration in FL so their advertised price is it? That dealership seems to be a good one. I talked to the sales manager last fall and she seemed to be a straight shooter.

Where was your $1500 off deal?

Are you going to check with Hendersonville?

I had a smoking deal in Sarasota,FL until the jive talking saleman mentioned a $699.50 dealer fee.

Please let me know what you come up with.

BTW, I bought my 2002 in 2001 and only took it back to any dealership once for a free headlight adjustment. Oh and once to have the frame inspected for rust this year.

I bought my taco from 400 miles away. Had em put it on a flatbed and dump it in my driveway. If they want the sale, make em do it.
