Hey TW! Just joined the neighborhood. I wanted to put the feelers out there and see if anyone else has encountered this. I had an 08 PreRunner SR5. Just your basic SR5 package 4x2, 4.0 Liter, no towing package, stock tires. While I had it, it averaged 21-22 MPGs. Well, I decided to turn it back in, it was a lease truck, and I bought a 2010 PreRunner, TRD Off Road, 4.0 Liter, tow package, etc. Well, the mileage on this truck doesn't get any better than 19 MPG. What happened? Is is just no 2 Tacoma's are alike, is the TRD heavier, is it the BF Goodrich tires? With it still under 5K, is the engine still breaking in? My driving habits haven't changed and the tire pressure is right on. If anybody can offer any help/advice, that would be great. Thanks!

Stick on hood scoop from Autozone.
19 is about right where it should be...

Could also be your driving habits.

Based on many other people's mileage, 19 isn't bad at all.

    hey guy!

Well let me add my experience....
I have a double cab 4x4 TRD sport, longbed with street tires..

and I see 18-19 short highway-- less than 200 miles.. But on long trips-- 300-400 miles.. I have seen 20.5 to 22..
Cruise control - never over 75 on long haul got the best MPG..

City and short commutes-- less than 50 miles between parking I see 16 to 18..

Today I moved about 2 tons of 3/4 gravel in 3 loads my estimate was I got about 14 MPG-- (trips were in WNC mountains, lots of hills, and slow in 4th gear of 5 speed Auto)

so I think your about right!

You should improve with more mileage. Break-in on the 4.0 is roughly 20K.

You went from an SR-5 to an OFF ROAD TRD, so there is some more weight and heavy duty items... Since it isn't 4WD, not sure what those are for your Prerunner.

My 2010 4WD OFF ROAD 4 DOOR AUTOMATIC 4.0 is getting 15-17 mpg city to highway at this point, with 7,500 miles on it. Note my average mileage posted by 'Fuelly'.

Good deal. I appreciate the replys back. Good to know I'm right in line with all other Tacomas on MPG.

At 5k you're still breaking in. I just hit 15k and my mileage has improved. I was only getting around 300/tank, now 340.

I'm hoping that my mileage will improve over time as the engine and drive line components break in. So far I'm pleased that I can get better than EPA MPG specs. I've never driven a M/T vehicle where I couldn't... :D
