Chipped keys/kill switch?

Do all 2nd gen (my 2008) have chipped keys? I was going to put in a kill switch but if each key is chipped I quess a kill switch is unnessary??.......thanks

 

im pretty sure all the new tacomas come with it not sure about the early 2nd gens but my 09 came with a chipped key

 

This is correct. If they want your truck, they'll need to drag it onto a flatbed, or wire up an ECU on the spot.

In Canada they do, by law, for years 2008 and up. I believe it's optional in the USA.

Edit: If you have a flashing car symbol next to the clock when the key is out, then you have the chipped key.

 

The guy at the dealer told when he gave me my keys was that if you look at the key, there is a very small round indentation. It's closer to the black part. Thats where the chip is. At least thats what he told me.

not true, i have a 06 and it has the car symbol but not a chipped key.

 

my 06 has a chipped key....

 

Anyone know if this is true? I always thought that the chip would be in the black plastic part. Has anyone cut apart the plastic of their key to verify? If it actually is embedded in the metal, my next little project might be the leatherman key holder

EVERYBODY open your Owners Manual to page 12.
It shows pictures of what the chipped key vs. non chipped key looks like.

Also, the chip is not in the metal, it's in the rubber part.

I am not sure what you mean by a chipped key, I suspect you mean a key with an embedded chip. My '09 Access Cab has a regular key, no chip in it. Duplicate the key anywhere.
