Possibly, I'd have to figure out exactly where the rear tire was going to sit though. Not sure I'd have much adjustability.

Yep, I just lay my Trek mountain bike on its side in the bed. I never understood the need for a rack.

I do that with my mt bike but not my road bike. I spent too much on it and wouldn't want to risk something happening on the way to a race. I'm not that speedy to afford having to stop and fix something. :) luckily my bike is tiny so it just rides in the back seat!

Bike racks on trucks serve several purposes. Racks provide the ability to lock the bike when running into the store before or after a ride (they keep the opportunist thief from stealing). Also, if you ride with more than one person, without a rack, two bikes get tangled together (nothing like scratching a sanction on a fork or rear shock because of the way they rubbed on each other during transport).

meh, I've been throwing it in the bed. Don't have time to be taking the wheel off every single morning. It would be nice if the bed didn't get scratched though.

Yes, but not so great once you have more expensive bikes and/or few of them to transport at the same time. It also frees up bed for camping gear etc.

Just bought Swagman XTC-4 hitch rack. Have to assemble it and will post some pics and quick review then.
