WTF is up with my BRAKES!!!!@!

For a while now my brakes have been feeling mushy and like they travel too far. This morning on my way to work they are nice and firm, near perfect. 5 mins ago I go back to my truck to make a quick bank run and now they're mushy again. Thoughts anyone?
FYI: I've already had the brake fluid replaced and the rears have been adjusted.

 

could be heat...the lines may expand after driving or if the weather is hot...The answer would probably be switching to steel braided lines...let's see wht other people think.

 

This makes a lot of sense actually. This morning was colder than most, however, i've been in colder areas and the brakes still feel mushy. Where can I get steel lines and how much $$$.

 

Steel lines and a flush are a great idea, but you may have a bad vacuum booster or master cylinder. If I were you, I would have it checked out by a professional brake mechanic. You don't want to take a chance with your brakes. JMO.

 

I just did a flush, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to do it again.

 

I had a CrownVic Interceptor that was doing this exact same thing intermittently. Bled the brakes and thought that fixed it. Nope. Replaced the master cylinder and they were perfect.

Just be careful. I was sitting at a stop light one day with my foot firmly on the brake. Next thing I know I was headed for the car in front of me. The brakes would feel fine, then just sink to the floor.

 

Funny thing is, I already had toyota look at my brakes and they said they were fine. I guess ill need to go elsewhere.

 

From my experience with brake problems in the past...........the culprit is usually the master cylinder.

Does anyone know how I can check the master cylinder to see if it's still good or not?

 

I would bleed the system once again, the old fashion way, one guy in the car pushes on the brake the other opening the bleeder screw. youd be surprised how many shops bleed brakes the wrong way just using the bleeder pump. Try it out it wont cost a thing

66k, had the fluid flushed at 65k

 

The milage is ok I dont think you have a master cylinder problem, try bleeding first then go from there....hope it helps

 

It is possible that the brakes were not flushed properly and you have some air in the system. Try bleeding the brakes and if that doesn't help, have a mechanic check it out.

 

I'm having the same problem. at a a stop light I need to push the brake down all the way. I thought my brakes would be improved after I got new front rotors and new pads but they are still the same mushy brakes. To stop my truck I almost need to push the brake down all the way, if I tape the brakes nothing happens.

 

i wouldn't say mine feel bad, but i do find it helps to pump them every now and then.

From the research I've done it appears that this will solve our problems.

 

I know where you guys are comin from- I have mushy brakes and when I use the parking brake, there is virtually NO resistance pushing the pedal down to the floor... But then again I do have 88k on the odo. so quite sure a brake job is in my near future!

 

Have you had your rears cleaned and adjusted? Have you flushed out your brake fluid?
