I'm pretty sure it's activated by speed and not distance. At least this is how it is for most of Toyota's vehicles. Once you get above 10 or 15mph it activates the chime. I might be wrong but this is what I noticed on a few Toyota's and other cars. I'd check to verify this but I have an 06.

This is really funny because like the OP I have a 29lb. Boston Terrier that sets off my seat belt alarm. What a coincidence. I'm going to do this mod right now.

It worked on my '09. Now I just need to kill the door chime when I leave the keys in my truck. On purpose.

I turned off the seatbelt chime on my O9. I do not have DRL's and I drive a lot with my head lamps on. I noticed yesterday since turning off the belt chime I also do not get a chime when I leave my head lamps on.

Nevermind I got the warning light to stop flashing on the dash in my 2004 Taco. I just disconnected the sensor underneath the driver seat. It worked like on my Mustang I had too.

I've wondered how you go about doing that. Someone said that you just open the door, close it, then open it again. But it doesn't work on mine.

Great 'mod', turning off the ongoing chimes. Did mine a few days ago. Hated stopping at the mail box and not buckeling up for the last 200' just to listen to 'ding, ding' ding, ding ding DING DINg Ding '

I would like to try this but was wondering; once the horse gets out of the barn can you get him back in? I live in N.J. and we have state inspection. I would be afraid to turn it off if I can’t get it back on for inspection. Thanks.

I haven't tried to turn my chimes back on but I am guessing it is a simple toggle on, toggle off setting using the trip odo button. When I turned mine off I toggled it a couple of times from off to on. I can't imagine your inspection dudes are smart enough to even realize if a seatbelt chime is on or off.

I found out the hard way that simply disconnecting the battery will set it back to factory settings (chime on). I rewired my DRL switch yesterday and had to disconnect the battery. Needless to say, I performed this procedure all over again.

...you can also turn it back on by doing the procedure again (just went and tried it).

    I agree!

I did this and it made me hate the remaining chimes even more....
(Apparently I didn't spread my chime hate around enough)
Plus I want everything quiet as possible for hunting, so I just took apart the dash and removed the buzzer....

NO MORE CHIMES EVER AGAIN!!!!! :D:D:D:D:bananadance::bananadance:
