Arm rest fix

thought i was being to rough on it. i'm a lefty and rarely rest my arm on it and it's cracked. WTF toyota?

 

Regular Devcon plastic welder work as well? or do you have to use the PW II?

Anyone found other adhesives which work as well?

It's point pressure from leaning on it with an elbow.
Mine has been cracked for a few years now

 

From the OP pics it looks like it's cracking on a embossed line (flex line?) molded in the back side of the armrest? I think that gussets here would give more strength... regardless it sounds like the pieces are defectively molded as well. Insufficient packing, too cold of a mold/material or too much regrind will cause this. I can't see the part up close but It looks like it might have "weld lines" in the material as well.... I'd say poor molding and QC at a minimum. All parts like this get brittle with age but that embossed channel on the back side is nothing more than a weak point in the design (hence the cracking at the emboss line). Combined with poor molding quality and this is what you get. IMHO

 

I agree on a manufacture issue, but I took them off my 4 month old truck and had them covered when I had leather installed. I don't expect I can warranty the cracked armrest now, so I am looking to repair and reinforce it.

 

IT's a shame that suck an new vehicle has issues like that....

So both the armrests on my new/old '06 Tacoma are totally broken. No ripped fabric but definitely busted plastic underneath.

It feels like pretty much the whole pattern is broken like a perforated waffle. It's amazing that I haven't driven my whole arm into the inside of the door which, I'm sure, would be painful and likely dangerous especially on the road.

I'm going to likely pull my doors panels off and put some JB PlasticWeld and maybe make some armatures out of heavy wire or something.
Until I can see how bad it is I won't know the extent of the damage but I can tell it's not too good.

Should be a fun couple hours of swearing and being annoyed at poor forethought on the part of the 'Yota engineers!

 

I did the broken arm rest repair, and it turned out crappy. If you plan on repairing using plastic weld, be sure you have 2 people working, so one can keep proper pressure from the fabric side. I did mine alone and it does not line up very well. It is too late to redo it, because I fiberglassed over it. I will search for a used door panel in great shape.

 

Late to the party. But l have the same issue on my driver's door armrest.

go buy a small fiberglass repair kit. I used a couple fiberglass sheets and its so strong I can put my whole weight on armrest and its sold as a rock. good luck

I just went thru this with an '06 Toyota Avalon - dog jumped into the back seat and then jumped all over the armrest B4 I got it covered. My bad. For all the grief I would go thru using my lousy art work - I opted for this. I suspect they are available from someone out there for Tacoma's:

I used jb weld on mine and somehow it didn’t hold after a few months

 

The plastic needs to be roughed up before the JB Weld will hold, and after it sets overnight, you really need to reinforce it with fiberglass mat. There is now a ready to use fiberglass repair that does not need to be mixed. It is called FiberFix Ridged Patch. It was a SharkTank promoted product.

 

I've been using a mouse wrist pad glued on the arm rest for many years on my 06 Prerunner. Here's a link at Amazon. Just cut the wrist part off.

Mine has apparently been cracked for some time, but I always just assumed it was a random Toyota sound, kind of like the 150k dash shake that we've always had with our Yotas.

Before I go yanking the entire door panel off, does this panel come off without removing the door panel?

 

The door panel needs to be pulled off.
