is 0-30w synthetic oil sufficient?

I currently run Mobil1 5w-30 full synthetic and am considering switching to Mobil1 0w-30 full synthetic. Has anyone else did this? I have an 07 and I know it calls for 5-30 but the 0-30 says it exceeds 5-30 specs. I am guess I'm just curious to see if anyone else has done the switch and how did it work out. Thanks.

Do you live on the north pole? If not don't use it. It's made for super cold.

Here I'll clarify. It will turn to water pouring ability in the cold. Will it cause damage? No but it's not the recommended weight so don't put it in. Deny them the excuse to refuse warranty work.

If your not subject to 40 or 50 below zero startups there is no reason to use it. 5 / 30 works just fine at -40 BTW

That is what the Amsoil site recommends for the Tacoma. I have been running the 0 20 in our Honda Odyssee for 45K.

Yeah, it's fine to use. If you look at the kinematic viscosities it's virually identical to 5w-30. After seeing some UOA's with it in a few engines and it looks to have a great additive package. I've been using it for 30k with no issues.

Really this oil is formulated for POS cars with small engines that have cold weather starting problems. No need to run it in a Tacoma. 20 weight might be too thin for hot driving conditions. It's a crap shoot. That's why they mark the required weight on the filler cap.

Did the additive package look better than the 5w30 M1?

I wonder it compares to the 0w40 Euro formulation?

I just changed the oil in my son's 09.
I had 0-20 mobil 1 full syn. in it.

You would have had a hard time convincing me to go this light espically in the high heat we have here a while ago but after doing some reading about it I have no concerns at all.

I will post the article I read that changed my thinking from what I used to run to what I do now.

If you want to be sure run the factory suggested weights and you will not go wrong.

I will try to find the story for you folks.

It should be ok, most of the newer Lexus models all are taking 0w-20 not just POS cars like a previous poster pointed out. Lexus ls460, rx350, gx460, and hs250 all are on the 0 weight and have changed their intervals to 10k. I even put it in my 02 f150 because there is so much extra around the shop.

I use amsoil 5w-20 in my '09 taco with the v6 and the tick has gotten some quieter. I live in south texas and it gets blazing hot in summer (9 months out the year!) and my truck is running so sweet it's hard to believe. I started with 10w-40 since I had some of that left over and used it but I really prefer the 5w-20 now. In any case it will always be amsoil synthetic no matter what weight I use. And bypass filtration also.

Don't know about going with 0w-20, but I suspect it would not hurt anything. I think that is made for where it really gets brutally cold. In south texas, that is absolutely the last thing to worry about. As much as the tick almost stopped in my engine, I can tell it has a lot to do with the lifters and so running the slightly thinner oil is the right call. When I was using the 10w-40 the tick was horrible. Now it is almost gone.

He's talking about going from 5w30 to 0w30. Go for it.
It just means on start up the viscosity will be a little thinner, but it'll be the same for operating temperature.

Toyota recommends it for our trucks in Canada due to the cold. But honestly, if the cost is the same, and you don't live where it's really cold, don't bother.

The VVTI works off of oil pressure. You fuck with that by using the wrong viscosity you'll lose power, fuel economy and do god knows what else.

I don't know where this 0-20w mess got started but my original question was about 0-30w. As for the pos comment my brothers new denali Yukon runs it qnd I would hardly call that a small engine nor a pos. Please help with 0-30w Mobil1 for 2007 4.0 V6

It'll work fine. The first number is the winter number for cold viscosity. Really, so long as you keep the last number the same, you should be good.

Again, for cold 0w30 is what toyota recommends we use in our vehicles.

Thing is it's June so no need to run that till fall then you only truly need it if you live in Minot ND.

Waste of time putting it in now.

As for none Toyota's I really don't give a shit what you put in. Sand for all I care. This forum is Tacoma so I'm assuming the questions are related to that engine. Would make more sense to use it in the 4 banger in the winter then in the 4L. But it would also depend on if you plug your truck in or it's just brutal cold starts. Just cause some oils are rated for some models and work perfectly it don't mean there rated for all engines. Kind of pointless to compare the GM to a Toyota, there completely different engines.

If you don't have a garage and don't plug it in it would be prudent to use it if it gets really cold outside. Putting it in the summer is a complete waste of time and really could be counter productive. It will have no viscosity on first startup. You might want a tiny little bit there to keep surfaces lubed till it heats up and thickens. You don't want that feature in the summer.
