For '05 Prerunner and 4x4 owners...

FYI..there is a TSB that addresses steering wheel shake at highway speed in 2005 Prerunners and 4x4s. They fixed this problem at the factory in late 2005, by replacing a spring in the steering rack control valve with a heavier duty spring. Early and mid-2005 trucks have the bad spring.

The spring itself is a $3 part. At a dealer they'll charge 3.5 hours labor to pull the rack and swap the spring.

I am getting ready to do this but need to acquire/borrow some special tools.

+2 on having to deal with steering rack WAY too soon. Had no vibes but one side started leaking. Was taking truck in for other oil leak to be done under warranty. Dealer said no on rebuild when I asked, said it would have to be replaced. Then they call back telling me they had none available in the whole country so they would be sending it out to be rebuilt. Fucking ridiculous lying bastards. Why wasn't this an option when I specifically asked? Because it was 700.00 cheaper option, that's why. Only have drivetrain warranty. I have replaced too many seals on this bitch for 75k, sucks ass. Hope the new ones last longer than the junk they put in in Freemont. Rant & threadjack over. I guess if I can spend a grand on mods then I shouldn't bitch about burning a grand too soon for some critical parts? Bullshit.

Had this done on my truck within one year of owning it. This was after Toyota replacing tires and repeated balancing.

My steering rack was replaced by the extended waranty. They didn't even mention rebuilding it. I have replaced a ton of seals on mine as well. They don't like water with sand in it.

Mine have not seen enough water/sand for it to be any issue. My 82 had shittons of mud/water/sand thrown at it and I never touched any seals before 250,000 miles. These are some subpar Mexican made seals or something, they just suck.

How about this one:

I never had any vibration through the steering wheel at all. This week, the dealership rotated the tires as part of a regular maintenance. Voila: vibration. No rebalancing, no monkey business. Just back wheels on the front and front wheels on the back. I'm half wondering if it's not a tire problem.

I was wrong once B 4 but your back end isn't going to feel an unbalanced tire like the front end does. When a tire wares it can through it out of balance and when you moved the worn tires from the back to the front you felt it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Dude...... That's EXACTLY the scenario that happened to me!! I had to get it rebalanced and it got 100% better, but it's still not like it was before the rotation.

This is why I wonder about the tires themselves. george3 makes a fair point, except for this: I had Michelin snow tires put on before I took delivery of the truck last fall. They never vibrated a bit. The summers only went on for the first time this spring. The mounting was done by the anal-retentive shop that does all the work on my Porsche, so I can promise you that the balancing was perfect. So that's the little kink in my story.

My steering wheel shakes, sometimes. But it only does it when I'm useing the brakes hard going down a steep road really fast and its because my rotors are worped. I need to have them turned. My problem is how in the hell do you get them off. Is there a link or video how to get the front rotors off? I have and 08 2x4 tacoma with stock wheels and tires. I could use some advice.

Its the tires. Had mine balanced 4 time the took it to Toyota and they got it right. They put a TON of weight on the rims before it was right. Everyone else got them close and said they are fine caugh "Bullshit "

its not the tires, I know what Im talking about in my situation. My situation are the brakes, I live in the mountains and I have experienced brake failer, when the brakes get so hot the petal gos almost to the floor, and you can not stop for SHIT. So, I know I worped my rotors, so stop waisting my time and tell me is there a link or video how to remove the rotors. Sorry man, but I know its not the tires or rims. I am on my second set now and they all have been rotated and have been properly taken care of. If you dont know how to take the rotors off just dont respond. Thank you.

The difference between the vibration you get from balance problems and the vibration you get from warped rotors is as obvious as the nose on your face. Rotors may be your problem, but they aren't everybody's problem. That's why this thread is a sticky, and why it's not called 'how to take your rotors off'.

I had this same problem with mine. I asked about the TSB concerning the rack and pinion after taking the truck into my local toyota dealer multiple times. They would rebalance the wheels and call it a day. I was told that the TSB was not the problem, but the fact that I am running aftermarket wheels is causing the tires to wear unevenley. This is not the case, as the offset on my new wheels is only about a 1/4 inch different, and I was running the factory tires on them. I have since taken all of the weights off of my wheels, and and had a local tire shop put "equal" into the tires. Have not had a problem with them since,and this was done about 2 years ago

I have factory wheels and tires, my problem of the shaking of the steering wheel is ONLY when I apply the brakes. No matter how fast I drive I doesn't shake only when I apply the brakes HARD, usually going down a steep hill fast, between 45 - 90mph but only when I use the brakes, when I let off the brakes it gos away. I know I worped my rotors. My search continues on how to remove the rotors...
