I just received a quote from my local dealer for a 2009 4X4 double cab, TRD Off Road with JBL. The Dealer quoted me 30,150 + Tax + Tags + Doc Fee. This is only 730.00 under sticker when I build on Toyota's website. I am used to buying domestic vehicles, Is this typical for a Toyota or are they trying to rob me. I never paid any over 500.00 over invoice for any of my Fords and even when I bought my H2 I got it for 500 over invoice back in 03 when they were waiting lists to get them! By the way great informative website! I will post pics and questions if I end up with a Tacoma!

I have heard that the base sticker price has a 12.4% mark up and all of the options including the sport and off road packages have 20% mark up. By using this, you could get close to their dealer cost. May be total crap but I am going to try it.:D

If you are a subscriber of Consumer Reports, they have that auto buying service that will tell dealer cost, holdbacks and incentives.

Introduce competition - tell about your experience with Ford and why you want to go Toyota. Introduce Nissan Frontier and tell how you can get more for less. Tell them you can get an F-150 or even a Tundra for less! Shop at other toyota dealers and introduce their quotes if necessary, introduce fake quotes from other dealers if necessary! Have them come down on that price. Do not accept just $700 below MSRP. Do not have them make you think that it's a good deal either - let them know that you are a wise shopper and that you know you can get a Tacoma for less, because the way the economy is going and the fact that gas prices in moving the market away from trucks and SUVs rapidly, you can be in control of the sale - especially if the dealer is desperate enough!

Because you are local, they'll want to squeeze as much from you as they can because they know they have the "locality" advantage over other dealers.

This is what I've learned when shopping for new vehicles. I've negotiated a 2008 Tacoma as much as 6.2k off MSRP by introducing the competitiveness of other dealers. Although I didn't do that much shopping with the 09' Tacoma I've gotten close to 3k off MSRP so far.

P.S....volume dealers tend to give best prices. These are dealers that prefer to move big inventory fast enough to get a big reward check from Toyota for making all those sales in little amount of time. For them to do this they have to sell $200 above invoice (what they paid for it) or even sell below invoice! The losses of potential profits are covered by Toyota when the dealer gets paid. Also, I never shop local! Get quotes from far away dealers...knowing that you are far away they are more willing to strike a better deal to out-of-towners.

The salesman just emailed me back and he's arguing with me over what MSRP is. I told him to go to toyota.com and build the truck himself. I'm not going to fool with this dealership at all. That price was just so far out of line with what anyone should expect with a 4X4 given the current state of the auto business. Regardless of buying Ford, Chevy, Toyota or etc. I will keep everyone updated with other quotes I get and where I'm at in buying a Tacoma. Thanks everyone for your replies!

You are holding all the cards car sales are at the lowest in history. Keep telling them the price you want to pay. Visit several dealerships. Dont fall for the free crap just find out bottom line price. I just bought a 2008 4 door prerunner V6 TRD for 26,368.00 out the door no trade.

    Good Luck

Just email to the internet department. When I worked at a Toyota dealer the internet guys sold right at cost, sometimes below. You got the vehicle and price all picked out before you even have to go in and deal with the salesmen and A*hole managers!! Easiest way to buy a car IMO!:)

i purchased an 09 barcelona red dc 4x4 6spd short bed with the sport pkg(py) no jbl or bluetooth. 26750 + tax tags and fees. sticker was 29700 so 2950 off sticker. but 7% tax, 4 yr registration and fees ate up most of that. not too bad overall i guess.

Check nearby in DE. You may get a better deal out away from the city.

No need to pay for an auto buying service. You can do just as good with carsdirect.com free version. I made out like a bandit on carsdirect when I bought my 03 Tacoma. I got it for way below invoice & had some extras thrown in on the deal. Put it this way, When I traded it in a yr & a half, they gave me $2500 more than I owed.

Follow these rules, put before us by Poleman72. Pit other dealers against each other, lowest price wins.

dude I wish I lived in DE, no income tax and no sales tax!!
man oh man!! that's like gold!!

I need either a volume dealer or like u said DE, which is not far by me anyway since I live in south nj.

the tax in NJ adds like $2000 more!
