Buying a 2010 Regular Cab 4x4. HELP PLEASE

I'm new to this forum and I have a dealer near me who has a 2010 regular cab 4x4 with 5 speed manual tranny, bench seats, manual windows, etc. Very few bells and whistles. I'm trying to haggle a good deal and wondering what you would be a target price?? The dealer lot is loaded with 2011 models so I assume they want the 2010 gone?? Sticker price is $20,075. I'm thinking $18,300 as my max price??

Also, I have a 2001 Tacoma with low mileage (65K) but I live in a road salt area. Depsite garage storage, oil undercoating, etc....the 01 Tacoma has serious rust on the frame with all the undercoating GONE and bare metal showing on the whole frame. I own another vehicle, a 2001 GM S-10 (yuk!) that has zero issues with frame rot and has been totally neglected when it comes to washing, etc. The S-10 runs like crap BUT the frame looks great compared to my Tacoma from the same year. Toyota says the frame rot is not to the point of frame replacement but it's getting close. The truck is otherwise rust free except the frame which is toast.

QUESTION: Has Toyota fixed the frame rot issues on the newer models? Is the undercoating better these days?? I noticed the frame on the 2010 is "C" channel shaped rather than the press brake formed box tube configuration on my '01 which trapped all the road salt and other crap inside it. Any opinions appreciated as I really want this truck but don't want another rust bucket.

 

My 2010 Reg Cab 4x4 has been a great little truck so far, with 12K on it. Frame looks great on mine so far!

I think 19,300 is MSRP on a 2010 Reg Cab 4x4. Few hundred charge for the sliding rear and floor mats, and then toyota's BS delivery fee (approx 700). So their sticker is as it should be, and not wildly above what is normal.

If I remember right 18,300 is about what I paid before taxes, tag, etc and this was in FEB 2010. Also if I recalling correctly, 17,900 is invoice on those trucks. I'd say offering 17,500 as a starting point would be a solid first offer.

IMO, I wouldn't get the reg cab 4 banger. I sometimes wish I had the power of the v6, and the ease of power locks and windows. I'd look hard for a lightly used access cab V6 (auto). Should be able to snag a certified 08 or 09 base model 4x4 with less than 30k for around 23 grand if you look, negotiate the price, and are willing to travel a bit.

 

www.truecar.com will give you a good scenario of the price points. I am in the same boat... trying to hunt down a Taco as well.

 

I would ask to see the dealer invoice and offer $500 over that. That's what I did when I bought my '08. Remember the stealer is not your friend!!

Shows invoice for 2010 Reg Cab at just over 18k. Remember dealers pay delivery fee's as well!

 

I don't think Toyota has fixed the rust. Mine has a couple spots where the paint has chipped off the frame and surface rust has started. And I'm in California, so we don't have salt on the roads. I have seen a few pictures on here of five year old trucks with some pretty ugly rust starting already. They probably won't rot in half since the frame is no longer boxed, but they will rust.

I like my truck, but if I was moving anywhere where they salt the roads I would sell it before I left and buy something else that won't rust.

 

I got mine for 17,500 otd they changed the price to make all the fees total up to that number. it was for a 09 like the one you are talking about.

 

I bought my 2010 reg cab 4x4 for about $18,500 and that was the best deal I could do after shopping around a bunch.

 

Thanks to all for the info! I'll start at $17,500 and work it from there. $18,000 will be my max and then I walk. It does have sliding glass window, bed tiedowns and alloy wheels also but not much else.

I'm bummed hearing that the 2010 still has frame rust issues. The undercoating looked much better on the 2010 compared to my '01. Plus the ammount of platics used seems to be greatly increased. We have an outfit out here that sprays Rust-Stop oil treatment in everything and it seems to work well if you do it every year. Cost is around $110 per year.
Dealer claims there is no more rust problems but I have yet to see a Tacoma that isn't covered with rust after 8 years or so. Why can't this company make a vehicle that doesn't rust? Chevy and Ford can and Chevy really sucks!

Tag, are you talking the standard six lug wheel like are on the SR5s? Or are you talking the wheels from say a TRD Sport? Look on the forum for pics. Those six lug steelies are standard bro. As are the bed cleats!

 

Yes, you are correct. It just has a sliding class window which I think is optional. The sticker said it had a small upgrade package but it wasn't much.

 

The one I'm looking to buy is the same color as yours is. It has a cap on the center of the wheels though. I love your photo!

 

It's an 06. It's possible the 2010s are okay, but I guess it's going to be five years before we'll know for sure.

 

Should I target $18,500 total price INCLUDING taxes?? We have 9% sales tax here which would bring this truck over $20,000 which is what the sticker price is to begin with. I'm heading to the dealer today so I need some fast help. THANKS.

 

I bought a 2010 Taco Reg. Cab 4x4 with the same options and price tag you said in the first post. After shopping and haggling with three different dealers, the lowest I could get one down to was $18,300 plus all taxes, tags, etc. Love the truck. I had a '99 Access Cab with the V6 and Auto, TRD packae. I don't miss it. Love the shorter wheelbase and the slightly less peppy engine but better mpg's (16 vs 21-22).

I regularly see trucks like you describe advertised in dealer fliers for around $18,500. As for frame rust yes they do have issues in areas where the roads are salted. My last 05 was a mess after 2 winters and then I painted the entire frame with rust bullet and it stopped it in it's tracks. My brother in law has an 05 also and he hasn't done anything about his frame. It looks terrible. I would suggest driving your new truck home, getting it into a heated garage, and put a few coats of real good chassis paint on the frame. I just bought another 05 that spent a few of it's winters in Florida so the frame was really clean. I sprayed a few coats of eastwood rust encapsulator on the frame right after I got it. Keep in mind these frames are made by the same companies that make a lot of stuff for the domestic manufacturer's and I believe they also made the frames on the 95-04 tacomas. I've seen other late model domestic trucks with rusty frames too. I think it's due to the environmentally friendly paints the manufacturer's are forced to use now.

 

Tag, 20k OTD is like almost 18350. Of course this is assuming no doc fees, no tag fees, etc. Really its like 17,900 sale price, as 450 is about average for dealer fees. It's doable but IDK... I think it's possible bc it's a 10 and not an 11.

Also, depending on how you finance you're looking at some finance fees as well.

I remember when I got my taco thinking It's crazy how an 18,300 sale price can become almost 21 grand at the end of the day!

I just got back from the dealer. What a bunch of liars. He shows me the invoice from the truck and it's $1000 higher than the sticker price! I point this out and he "has to talk to the manager", scratching his head. Comes back saying he will give it to me at 1.9% over invoice and quotes me sticker price as INVOICE! I tell him I'll pay $18,500 max (not including taxes and fees of course). That's it. He comes back with $19,600 so I walk. The truck has two options: sliding rear window and floor mats. Everything else was bone stock....bench seat, manual tranny, basic radio, no intermitent wipers, no cruise, etc. It also had over 300 miles on it from test drives. I popped the hood and all the nuts and screws, hose clamps, etc were covered in RUST. Totally brown with it. It had been sitting up front by a major highway that gets pounded with road salt from our recent heavy snows. I didn't like what I saw so I walked.

Test drive was nice though. It felt more roomy than my '01.

I felt like I was dealing with Jerry Lunderguard from the movie Fargo at this dealership. Looks like I'll be holding out until Spring. Maybe they'll have some Tacoma deals by then. Thanks for all the help !
