Would like to consult the experts.

I sold my 00 Toyota Tundra V8 4WD access cab due to fuel economy. I do miss it though. I used to own an 86 single cab, 2wd 22RE that was great.

I want to purchase an economical daily driver. I don't need snorting hp, I have a Celica GT4RC for that.

I'm leaning towards a 2010 SR5 4 cylinder, auto, access cab with less than 6K on the clock.

I have absolutely no need for 4WD. I live in Atlanta. I go off roading on my DR650.

    Edit:

I would like insight to the pros and cons of owning a 4 cylinder as opposed to a six. What is your experience with owning your model with respect to fuel economy? Does anyone who owns a 4 banger 2wd regret their decision? Should you have bought the 6? Anybody with a 6 wishes they bought the 4? Auto vs. Stick? Any other years better than others? Get the SR5? Don't get the SR5? Etc....

I'm trying to learn about the 2nd gen Taco's. I've been spending quite a bit of time reading posts. I have plenty of experience with Gen 1 Tacos. No door to the "access" area is the deal killer for that generation. It would be great if there was a "sticky" on "Taco purchase considerations" or "choosing the right Taco".

the 4cyl tacos got no power -imho. whether it be the regular truck or prerunner. ur better off just getting a v6, more power and better on gas now-a-days. gets better fuel economy i think. im just saying. if its not the 2rz or the 22r, there is no point in buying a 4cyl for tacoma now. just my opinion.

Just looking for something to bee bop around town in. Occasional Home Depot runs, toss my motorcycle in the back etc. I've driven the 4 and it's fine power wise. The 6 banger shows 4-5 mpg's less on the highway. I haven't been able to find a good real world comparo of the 4 and 6 fuel economy in a 2wd.

Why do you care about fuel economy if it's just 'bee-bopping' ?? Just say'n...

I was obviously not clear enough on my first post. I will edit it to reflect what I'm looking for.

670, I know the 4 pales in power to the six, but low fuel consumption is more important to me. For the 99% of the time the bed will be empty, I'm leaning toward the 4. I'll do more searching in the threads to glean more info on the fuel consumption of the two powerplants vs. output.

i have a 4cyl reg cab and i think it would be fine for hauling a motorcycle, ive had a couple hundred pounds in the back and it handled it fine, its obviously no race car though

it might be hard to go from a v8 to a 4cylinder though

Meh, I have a 4 cylinder Celica convertible, a 98 Mercedes E300 Turbo diesel and a Celica all wheel drive turbo. Don't think it'll be that tough.:) Thanks for the replying!

A Taco with my MB diesel motor in it would rock! 270lb ft of torque and 32mpg.

I've got a 2010 4 cylinder SR5 five speed access cab. I commute 100 miles daily and get between 24 and 30 mpg depending on season, load, and traffic conditions.
Definately not a high performance vehicle, but it hauls my Triumph Bonneville just fine and I've bottomed out the bump stops several times hauling firewood.
The Tacoma gets the job done for me. I've got an S-2000 and a Genesis Coupe if I'm in a sporty mood.
Tacoma is an excellent vehicle if you understand it's power limitations and utilize the machine accordingly.

I have a 2010 4x4 regular cab with the small engine. It's not a powerhouse, but it's totally adequate for around town and freeway driving. It does just fine with a load (the heaviest I have carried is 1400 pounds of gravel), and I get just under 20mpg driving mostly short trips in the winter weather. My friends with a V6 get about 5mpg less than I do, which is a pretty big hit.

If you are going to tow a lot, buy the V6. But for the kind of use you are describing, the 4-cylinder is going to be totally adequate.

i've got a access cab 4x4 2.7l and get around 20-22mpg in mostly stop and go driving. mine is a 5 speed and gets up to speed fine even with the 31in m/ts i have on there now. i don't tow at all but i do transport a motorcycle and don't even know its back there. i personally wouldn't mind having the v6 but i bought this truck for specific reasons and the 2.7 serves those purposes.

This is what I found when I had basically the same truck. It had adequate power and got decent mileage. For a regular 2 wheel drive I would think it would be even better. But I will say now that I have a V6 I can't imagine going back. And I'm only down 1-2 MPG at the most from my old truck.

I had a V6 in my '99 and my '10 is a 4 cylinder. While it's not a fast truck, it's got enough get up and go to get up to hwy speed before the end of the on-ramp. Before I upgraded to bigger tires, I was getting 22-23 mpgs. Now I'm averaging around 21. It's also winter now though so I'll see what comes with the summer gas. One thing I've noticed is that there is a noticeable difference between the 4 and 6 cylinder if you do mostly in-town driving. The difference drops though if you do mostly hwys. I figure it's cause the 4 cylinder works harder to keep the truck moving.

With all that said, I'm very happy with the 4 cylinder and would get it again.

I think the 4 works harder in the 4x4 than 2wd. Hence the close fuel economy. If I were going 4x4 I'd probably get the 6, but I'm not.

    Thanks!

    Advice:

    1. buy a 3 year old un modded 2 WD truck with low miles save the most and depreciate very little going forward. Especially since you have another ride.

    2. Get the 4cyl since you have the speedy cqar for fun and games... Its a truck and i assume you are not towing and just need it for basic truck stuff.

    3. I have the 6cyl HOWEVER if I drove more than 7 miles one way in 15 minutes to work I would be more concerned about MPG. If the truck I bought was a 4CYL I STILL would have purchased it. But they did not make 4 bangers in Double cabs in 08 and I refuse to buy a new vehicle that will be a used vehicle within minutes of signing the paperwork. EVERY vehicle you see on the road is a used car....Every last one of them.

If you are a Home Depot user 4CYL
IF you want less expensive service and Extended warranty costs 4CYL
    IF you don;t tow 4CYL

There is no reason to get a 6cyl if you don't care about major pick up or live in an area where you don't have long on ramps. or you don't tow or carry heavy cargo routinely.

My neighbor has a 4 banger and loves it. Never regretted it. Has no issues with pick up and loves the fuel economy. His is a "home owner" truck. Yard waste, some lumber and home furnishings now and then. Like me he has alternate forms of transportation. I have another neighbor with a 4 banger SB 4WD and he loves his as well...

I would have preferred a 4 banger but I did not want to buy new and wanted the double cab. I put about 6K a year on my truck or previous ride so gas mileage is moot. I think more in terms of service and fix it costs.

I have the prerunner 2wd reg cab. I love the 4banger fuel economy honestly. I havent been in a situation where I have felt "if only i had the 6". I do notice I get about 22mpg in the city, but our highways are 65-75mph so my hwy miles are about 20mpg. Given your needs for this truck, it doesnt seem practical for you to get the 6. Who buys a truck as a race car lol. stick with the 4 and enjoy those mpg's

I have a '10 SR5 2WD AC AT 4 cyl and it is just fine for a daily driver. Over 28 mpg on highway keeping it under 2000 rpms.

As you said, you have no need for 4WD so why purchase it (front differential ... which everyone says shakes = more $$ = more weight = less mileage).

If you are going to toss stuff in the back on the weekends this should just fine.

Test drive one or two for yourself and you'll see.

Don't worry what these 4WDers with their sixes have to say (they have a small pensis anyway .... therefore they need to compensate .... .... that'll get some replies).

    Too few to list.
I think if you want a daily driver pick up that gets good mileage, you should consider just getting a Toyota p/u with the 22re and save yourself the $$$. We used to have a 2007 Tacoma 4 cyl and the mpg is a little better than the v6 but not by much.
