2012 taco or 2012 tundra? Opinions wanted

Sadly, tomorrow we are trading in our 2011 taco reg cab 4x4 and 2011 4runner sr5 4x4. Toytec lift and BFg at's on the 4runner.

Anyway, we are going down to one vehicle and basically want to combine these 2 great vehicles into 1 as we don't need 2.

The vehicles we are torn between are a 2012 taco 4x4 DC sport long bed in magnetic grey , and a 2012 tundra 4x4 rock warrior 5.7L double cab in magnetic grey.

I need a family hauler for me and the wife and 2 kids. I also need a bed for landscaping work. I will tow a trailer that is less than 1500 lbs when empty and honestly don't see myself pulling over 5 k lbs in the near future. But maybe down the road.

10 mile round trip commute 5 days a week and local work and hauling the other 2. We don't drive that far for work but we do a lot of 2-4 hour drives to northern and southern cal for family trips.

My wife and I are having a hard time deciding what vehicle is best for our families needs. We realize the gas milage will come into play but also worry the taco may be too small for all of us. And those a just 2 of the many pluses and minuses we have come up with.

Thats the first tundra we thought about. 5.5 foot bed was the reason I choose the DC which has a 6.5 foot bed. I do have a trailer but I don't want a short bed on any pickup I buy

 

Wow do I wish I had this dilema! Tundra all the way IF you are ok with it! The tundra will definitely ride better.......IF you don't mind the size. It is difficult to navigate around parking lots because of size and turning radius. The gas is actually only a few MPG's off from the Taco but you get so much for it. As far as towing....the taco can handle the payload in terms of weight but drivability is just a tragedy. The Taco is just too light to do any real towing regardless of the specs. Comfort in the Tundra compared to the Taco is not even open for discussion! Don't get me wrong...I absolutely LOVE my Taco as it is the perfect truck for my needs and the few things that annoy me about it are manageable because the good outweighs the bad. But if I had a family to haul around....The Taco would not be parked in my garage if I could afford the Tundra.

 

Get the Tundra, you wont regret it.

 

Tundra with the 5.7. And mileage will probably be better or the same with the Tundra so why not get the bigger vehicle? I had a Crewmax and had to get rid of it when I got divorced. If I was single I would get the dbl cab but for a family you can't beat the crewmax. An awesome road trip vehicle.

Wallygator, we are looking at a tundra double cab, not crewmax. I completely understand the cm has more room inside but I want the longer bed of the dc. The kids are small .. Like 2years old and 6 months old small so they don't need all that leg room just yet lol. But for all the accessories that go with the kids the extra space in the back would be nice, however we have narrowed it down to the 2 vehicles in my original post.

Thank you but I have the exact tundra picked out if we decide to go that route. And the dealer has agreed to sell at invoice, and I have trade ins.

TUNDRA all the way. I will clear some stuff up mentioned in previous posts...

1. The gas mileage sucks. With 33s you should expect 13 mpg combined. 15 if you keep stock tires. I got 18-20 in my tacoma DC.

2. Ride quality: is no better in the tundra than the taco. period.
3. It is much more difficult to navigate.
4. The double cab tundra is bigger than the double cab tacoma. The crew max tundra is HUGE inside.
5. The 5.7 is an absolute BEAST. There is no beating 380+ HP and 400+ torque

I'm a bit confused. The rock warrior version of the tundra, the one we are considering, comes stock with BFG AT ko 285's. Which as far as I know are a 33" tire.

Are these the ones that you are saying will get 13 combined. Window sticker says 13 17

 

One of the biggest (and only) complaints with this truck was not getting what the sticker says...I have 33" Toyo MTs and a GOOD tank for me I will get 14-15 mpg combined. More times than not I've gotten 13.
My truck is 2wd. You can expect slighty worse mpg out out of the 4x4.

 

I understand. I know you want a dbl cab. But your kids will or anyone else who rides back there can recline the rear seats in the crewmax. They can grow up in that thing. It's so comfortable and for me it was worth the bed space decrease. The dbl cab looks nicer I think on the outside but inside where you ride the crewmax is hard to beat. Also I had a 4x4 crewmax with the 5.7 and my mileage was 15-17mpg. That's what I get now with a dbl cab Tacoma 6sp. 4x4.

 

I'm currently debating this very same move right now, thinking about trading my Mag Grey '10 DCLB 4x4 for the same color Tundra Double Cab Rock Warrior. I also considered the Crew Max, but like the DC for the same reason: I really need that 6.5 bed for the hauling I do. The Tundra DC has more room in back than the Taco DC does, and the Crew Max is just huge...I could play hockey in the back of that thing.

The ONLY thing that's making me pause is the gas mileage hit. I get 18mpg in the Taco in mixed city / highway driving, and despite what the sticker says, I know I'll be getting 13-14mpg on average in the Tundra. I did the math at an average of $3.50 per gallon, and with my driving habits, the gas difference will likely cost me around $600 per year. That isn't a huge dent in my wallet, but it's a dent nonetheless.

I've almost pulled the trigger a couple times, but I keep changing my mind, which means I should probably just keep the Taco a bit longer. We'll see what happens.

I am trying to avoid test-driving one, because I know all that interior room and the monster 5.7 are going to win me over. All that torque is going to make my checking account it's bitch.

 

Take a Tundra for a long drive around town and let your wife drive it and try to park where you normally do.The Tundras are huge.I prefer the F150 over the Tundra because it is a little smaller.The F150 is also too large for me and that is why I drive a Tacoma. I can afford any truck I want and the Tacoma is just more comfortable for me.

 

The tundra rock warrior is an awesome truck. I would just make sure both parties can drive it
