Filling Differential/Transfer Case

I'm not quite sure If I remember correctly but can the fill hole also be used as like a "dip stick". By that I mean once it's up to the fill plug it has the correct amount?

 

That's exactly what it's for.....filling and proper amount.

The hole is positioned there for a reason, so you CAN'T overfill it. When filling - always make sure the truck is on LEVEL ground.

If the truck is on level ground, you can open up the fill hole and stick your pinky finger (or other clean device) in there to check the oil level.

Some manufacturers say to fill it just below the fill hole. That's most likely to minimize the seepage of oil out of the drain plug. Yeah they can leak when properly torqued... But fill it until you get a nice stream coming out. Grab your plug and screw it in.

Just make sure you know EXACTLY where the fill holes are.

As a basic clue - Fill holes are usually in the middle (half way up) on the item at which you are trying to do the oil change on.

DO NOT put oil in a hole that's located at the TOP - this should be a clue that you're not using the right hole. Overfilling can be just 'as harmful' as not having enough oil.
