    Has anyone used the notches in the side of the bed to build a sleeping platform?

    It seems that using some wood and the wheel wells it would be quite easy to build a platform that could be used to support a mattress while providing storage underneath the bed. Anyone given it a try?

    as long as you support it in the middle on a few places you should be good! i see absolutely no issues with resting some boards across the "shelf" in the bed. if you end up doing that, throw up some pictures! id be interested in how it looks and works for you.

    You don't need a center support. I used 2-2x6's layed in the notches and 3/4" plywood on top of them to make a flat area. I use mine for cargo separation but the concept is the same. It's very sturdy. I made sure to have a couple panels in the front that lift out separately in case things slide to the front of the bed underneath the platform.

    Those notches are meant to accept 2x8 cross boards

    Use 3/4" plywood for your platform , you should be golden

    3/4" plywood doesn't hurt either. It's definitely overbuilt if you just want to sleep on it, but I use it for cargo. I've had over 1,000 lbs sitting on that platform a couple weeks ago an no failures.

    wow thats crazy you have that much on there! good deal! might be going to pick up some lumber this weekend and some marine grade carpet so it will be nice and clean for camping trips

    No such thing as overbuilding for me, 6"3 and 260lbs. I also wouldn't be sleeping back there alone. lol.

    The area beneath the platform will be perfect for storing my gear/guns that I want to keep locked up while camping.

    Heres one i made a while back. didn't want to kill all the space in the bed. I have a self inflatable ground pad that fits perfectly on it. I blocked the windows with felt and i sleep like a champ in the back of it. The drawer goes back to the wheel well, and i made a hatch to access behind that for more storage. I recently ditched the drawer slides because they didn't go back far enough. i put some Teflon sliders on the bottom of the drawer to let me pull it out all the way. drawer sliders for 4ft are big bucks!
