2012 v6 oil changes??

I am coming up on my first service date in my 2012 Tacoma. It's at the 5000 mile mark almost but the dealer said they change every 10000 with synthetic oil. Does this sound right? In my 07 I changed the oil myself every 5000 miles. But I got lifetime free oil changes from the dealer when I purchased the truck. So I don't know if I should pester them into it or not. 10,000 miles seems a lot even for synthetic oil and especially for a break in period of the engine. What have y'all done with your trucks regarding this situation? Thanks for any helps guys

 

4.0? Every 5k, don't do just an 'oil change' you need service lol. Maybe not the first 5k but you get my point.

 

I'm going to do the dealer service every 5k regardless. And it is the 4.0. I was just concerned about the oil change every 10k that seems a lot to me even with synthetic. Will the dealer usually change it every 5 if u ask them too? I don't know I've got free lifetime oil changes and I'd like for the dealer to do it in case problems come up in the future. It has lifetime power train warranty also, but I would like the service documented just in case they tried to crawfish on me ya know

 

I just had my 5000 mile service and the dealership did everything no questions asked. I'm a little cautious about other people working on my vehicles, so i marked the filter and oil plug plus measured the tread and then marked tires since they were all the same.

 

should be every 5000 miles oil and filter, rotate tires, yada yada. if you log on to your account at toyota.com it states all your service periods so you can keep track of all work done and see what needs to be done. and its in your owners manual.

i am going in for my first 5000 mile service tomorrow, and they are going to look at my creeky clutch..... wish me luck

 

For kicks I asked a '12 owner what his changes were and he said the dealer did him at 10k. I think there are a lot of trucks driving around on 10k changes. I will wait for the thread where an engine with 10k changes fails, but it's been pretty quiet......

 

I got synthetic put in at 5k, and I will have them do it again at 10k, 15k, etc...

If I'm willing to pay the upcharge for the synthetic, and they owe me an oil change every 5k miles, why would I only go for 10k changes?

 

Heh, well because your manual says 5k and the dealers doing 10k are just oblivious to the fact. I wonder what the updated v6 in the 4runner has for change intervals.

 

What grade of oil does your oil cap say. I believe Tacomas are one of the few still on a 5k change cycle. If the cap says to use 5W-xx, then you are on a 5K cycle. The synthetics that Toyota changed over to on the rest of their line are a 0W-xx and those are on a 10k cycle. That's what the Service Manager told me, but who knows...

 

On the 5TH generation 4Runner with the V6, it is every 10K miles. My wifes Runner has 27K miles and we have not had any issues.

 

My Toyota Care paperwork for my 2012 says standard oil change every 5k. Non synthetic oil. Service tech said the 4 cyl. takes synthetic. I'd check the Toyota website.

 

the V6 takes 5w-30 conventional oil so change every 5k miles. The 4 cyl takes synthetic 0w-20 synthetic so every 10k miles. I asked the dealer about how long I should run synthetic which would be 5w-xx and they said no more than 7,500 miles between changes. My wife's 2011 Corolla has the 0w-20 synthetic and it's changed every 10k miles, it's crazy! But she still has to go every 5k miles for tire rotation and fluid level checks etc

 

10k on synthetics isn't unheard of. I know people who have done that for awhile on other vehicles. Wouldn't bother me if that's what my schedule called for. What are they going to do, deny you warranty work for following THEIR recommended maintenance? lol.

 

2.7 four cylinder 2012 manual states every 5k miles or 6 months with synthetic 0W20.

He changes his every 7-10k miles and has over 270k, so I am sure it is fine. I spend the majority of my miles in town, so I cant see myself ever going over 5k.

 

If you have a v6, it's conventional oil every 5k. It's explicitly spelled out in the docs you received when you bought the truck. If the dealer insists on synthetic at 10k, you need to be talking to your state's DA and Toyota Corporate.

 

Yes the 4.0L is 5w30 in the tacos and every 5k miles, but the 4 cylinder is 0w20 and every 5k miles as well.

My dealer already set my 1st service apt @ 5K miles when I bought the truck - we estimated December.

My service interval on my 2005 BMW M3 is 'recommended' every 15K and only on Synthetic. I always do it every 7,500 and never have had any issues. BMW advertises that your oil changes are included - at 15K miles it's 3 oil changes during the warranty period (5/50K) so it's a scam.

Synthetic will go and remain stable for a longer time than traditional oil.

I am going to insist / pay for Synthetic in the Taco as I never want to run normal oil in that engine.
