Quick verification- 285/75/16 no go on stock suspension?

Found a good used set of 285/75/16's for a good price but I'm still currently on stock suspension. Just wanted to verify they will NOT fit?

Correct, unfortunately. Unless you don't plan on turning or going over anything bigger than a speed bump.

 

Sure they'll fit, you'll need to chop the cab mount and trim a bunch of plastic, and probably beat your pinch weld back, but they should fit. The real question will be your wheels, if they are the stock wheels, you'll need some spacers to bring those tires out at least an inch, but 1.25 would be preferred.

I could fit my 285s right now with less than stock height.

 

I'm running my 285s with stock wheels and spidertrax wheel spacers and 5100s at 2.5. Yea you will need some lift and also be ready to chop off some plastic.

 

If I don't do much off roading, would a decent set of 265's work for most light trails and such? I'm a noob to trucks/ off roading...

 

Absolutely. A lot of the guys who do serious off-roading run 265s. You're going to be fine with a 265/75/16 or 265/70/17.

 

Why do some go 285 then, looks mostly?

 

The ones who run them would have to say for sure, but yes, I'd guess that looks is about 80-90% of it. You do gain, what, an inch of extra height? So maybe that's part of it too.

 

It makes a large difference off road.

 

You gain 1/2" of clearance over 265's...

There is guy that lives by me that has a 2nd gen stock 4x4 sport running 285s with no wheel spacers. He said it rubbed like a bitch when he first put them on. I showed him that he had less than 1/4 inch between his tire and uca. So food for thought they will fit but not ideal.

 

Heck, on my 2013 with that tire AND the Toytect 3" Lift AND light racing uppers I STILL had to use the Spidertraxx 11/4 spacers. Every sharp turn with some speed, the tires grabbed the upper CA's so bad it almost stopped the truck. I didn't care for the pucker factor without the spacers.

 

And don't forget to tell that alignment shop that the caster has to be set well outside of factory specs. I could have used that info a few weeks back.
