The pump on my truck was whining for some time like all power steering does when its going bad. One day off road the power steering went out and the pump stopped whining. When I went to replace the pump today we flushed the reservoir because it was full of metal shavings from the old pump. Could the old pump going out destroy the power steering rack too? The new pump has been flushed and bled twice and still no power steering assist. The truck drives fine just no assisted steering.

I really do not know, but it stands to reason that if you had metal shavings in the reservoir there are also shavings inside of the rack itself. I would say the possibility of the blown pump taking out the rack are very good.

No personal experience to draw from, but a friend lost the power steering on his F350. He went out one morning and it was gone, no warning at all. Changed the pump with no improvement. Changed the steering box and that fixed it.

The pump was roaring off road about a week ago like I said, and then I lost power steering at about 35mph and noticed right away so I slowed.. We kept it running and hopped out, popped the hood and saw the line going from the reservoir to the pump was sucked shut on its self and pinched like the reservoir filter was clogged. The pump must have dried out, burnt up and shot metal into the rack, going through the rack and up the return line to the reservoir. I cant imagine running metal shavings in oil through a mechanical device with seals would be a good thing. The rack is shot. I think we have a verdict. Thanks guys

    :annoyed:

I have now replaced the pump AND rack and STILL no power steering!!!!!!!
We think the shitty replacement pump i got from autozone was broken or went bad right away. What kind of pressure should be coming out of the "high pressure" line from the pump to the rack??

This has been such a riduclous learning experiance.

We removed and completely flushed every power steering line and no clogs, flushed the reservoir and now im waiting on another Power steering pump to give that a shot. If this doesnt work im giving up and taking it to a local shop where some buddies work.

the pressure of most pumps is quite high. Some as high as 200psi.

I think you meant 2000 psi. 200 psi is nothing. Although stock pumps don't usually put out 2000 psi, but many aftermarket pumps do.

I can't confirm on our 2nd gens but more than likely if it has a screen (like most late model vehicles) in the reservoir, it's clogged especially if you have shavings and gunk that would prohibit flow in the PS system. Have you taken the reservoir out and cleaned the screen or replaced the reservoir ? My guess is a clogged screen in the reservoir causing no flow in the system.

Thats what im thinking, there was nothing close to 200 or even 1200 psi coming out of the high pressure line. I read a few places is should be 1200-1800 psi on tacos

We also thought the same thing, I know a clogged screen blew up the first pump because it caused the reservoir to over flow and choked the pump. This time we took the reservoir out and flushed it completely, blew it out with 200psi compressed air and clean out everything we could, I almost just want to replace the reservoir for complete peace of mind.

Going to swap a new pump into the truck in about an hour and put it all back together and hope for the best.. 2 pumps and 2 racks later lets see if I can get this figured out

Wonder if the stock rack can handle that extra psi. I'd like to bump the psi from stock, I can't steer when aired down

    holy shit!!!!!!

    suuper super :annoyed:

replaced the pump and it worked for about 5 minutes on my trip around the block then power steering pump started getting loud again and smelling hot then went silent and I lost steering assist again and the reservoir overflowed and splattered fluid out the top like the first time...........

    a) the new pump blew up again! (heard horror stories of people going through 4-5 parts from autozone before they got a good one)
    b) the reservoir is actually clogged somehow and caused the pump to blow up
    c) I have no idea what the fack is going on

Are these New Pumps or Remanufactured Pumps? I'm thinking Remans. You may want to just buy a New Pump and save yourself some aggravation.

This is how they describe the remanufactured pump:

Bushings and bearings are inspected and replaced if necessary

Shafts are precisely measured, center less ground and replaced if not to specification

Cam pack rings are resurfaced or replaced if necessary

    Painted
to help protect unit in harsh road conditions

I would just buy a new one.

I believe there is a filter screen in the supply tube to the pump, might wanna check that if you haven't.

Also...I am removing a stock pump in perfect working condition this weekend and installing a Trail-gear full hydro pump. PM me if you're interested, I will sell it to you on the cheap.
