Slight clunk when starting and stopping

As the tile stated I'm getting a Slight clunk when starting and stopping.
The carrier bearing seems like it has a lot of movement in it. Just using my hands I can move it back and forth 1/8" min.

How much slop should this thing have?
Seems way to much.

the weak Toyota leaf springs are the culprit!! had the same thing happening on my 2012, look into 4x innovations traction bar, it stopped my clunk.

 

I have the towing package so it has the heaver leafs

 

tow package does nothing to the leafpack.

U either have the same weak 3 leaf pack or 4 leaf TSB/newer sport pack as everyone without a tow package.

an AAL will help with the axle wrap

 

Was this the sale guy who told you this???

 

i also have the towing package with the heavier TSB 4 leaf pack. trust me, toyota leafs are notoriously weak.

 

Im heading out to first check the ubolt torque

 

I did this too. They were tight and fine, we have the same year truck, its, more than likely the same issue

 

Well the u-bolts were not even close to 73 lbs of torque.
Had to tightened each one at least 1 1/2 turns.
We'll see what difference it made with a test drive.

 

I also tow a 4,000 lb camper.
Would there be something better than the traction bar that's better for towing?

 

Coming from the front or back?

 

From what I saw the TSB was for two wheel drive models.

 

Back - It almost feels as though the brakes are grabbing and releasing

I had a similar problem... The splines that mate the front portion to the rear portion of the drive shaft were getting sloppy. I had let a friend use my truck for the weekend, come to find out he is rough with a standard transmission! It produced a distinctive *ping* sound when starting and stopping. I packed some grease on the splines and put it back together just to see if I had pin-pointed the problem. The sound went away! I ended up replacing the front portion of the driveshaft (it came with the carrier bearing). Problem solved... I must warn you, if you buy this from the Toyota dealership, you are going to get soaked (~$400+).

 

I would assume your noise is the slip joint as NM LANCE said. I have been greasing the splines with motorcraft Teflon grease. The grease seems to wear out just before every oil change. Since I'm out of warranty, I think Im going to install a jerk fitting to make servicing much easier.
