Xbox Ring of Death

I had the three rings of death last week on my 360 and i tried the x-clamp fix. Now i only have two rings. Did some research on youtube and people take blow torches to the heat sinks to melt the thermal paste and trick the chips into think its within normal operating range?

Has anyone been able to fix this? Microsoft was $140 to fix it. Dont even think they will now that ive opened the case though...

 

Just buy the new xbox and enjoy. The new ones are supposed to be free of the RROD

 

Fixed it. You take a heat gun to it for about 2 minutes and she fires up. Guess you have to trick the cpu into thinking its within normal operating temp? At first it wouldnt even boot and it went straight to the rings. Spent $15 on scres washer and thermal paste and got it fixed. Way better than what microsoft wanted

 

Good post.. I'm sure a lot of members of the site have 360.. you should post the fix with some pictures.. i'm sure it would help out a lot of people.. I haven't had that problem but I keep getting the open tray when a game is already in there.. I open it close it and tell me to open it again.. LOL..

 

Scrap that pile. And buy the new 360 "slim" one. Wireless internet connection built in.

 

My original xbox360 red ringed once already about 3 years ago, fixed under warranty. Now its starting to get to the point where it won't read the disc unless I let it warm up for a while. I guess another RROD is on it's way

 

they are free of the rrod if death because they dont have any red LEDs in them.

There's tons of videos on youtube on how to take apart your xbox and some on how to do the x-clamp fix itself. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY!!! Theres also kits you can buy on ebay that has all the washers and stuff already in it but you can buy everything at home depot. All you need is a really small flat head and philips screwdriver and torx bits sizes 8 and 10. Rubbing alcohol or goof off to take all the grime off the CPU and gaming chip. Then some thermal paste ( got mine at Fry's for $3) and a hair dryer would work fine instead of a heat gun if you dont have one.

Might do a full write up later tonight. There are sites that want you to buy a dvd showing how to do it for like $40 but thats still a rip off.

 

RRoD my first box just out of warrenty. Hot boxed it a couple times to limp me through to the purchase of my new one. Now the first box is just sitting in the closet not being used. Would love to get it fixed so that I could give it to my brother or use it as a DVD player. If you'd post pics of your work and links to where you bought your paste I'd rep ya!

 

I watched a bunch of videos and i think this was the most complete guide. It says to use 3 steel washers then 1 nylon but i only used 2 of the steel. I could see daylight between the chip and the heat sink so i figured that wouldnt cool it much if they werent touching haha

I used the genaric frys brand. It had three small bags of paste and it was like $4. You only need a small amount. A drop the size of a grain of rice on each chip.
