CV Boot Question

While changing the oil this evening, I noticed that my drivers side inner CV boot is torn and leaking. Looks like it just started, and was not this way last week when I had the truck aligned.

Anyway, the question is should I just replace the boot, or replace the whole axle while I am at it? I plan on running the truck for a lot more miles. How long do the CV joints typically last?

 

Another question, I have a 800 mile weekend planned. Do I need to get this fixed before the trip, or can it wait till next week without likely CV joint damage? (I am not wanting to take an extra day off work this week)

 

I would just change the whole axle, and order a set of CV boots as well. You can get the whole axle for 44 bucks each on rockauto.com, and the boots for 10. Put the new axle in, rebuild the other and use as a spare set. If it were me I wouldent have a problem running the cv boot like that for your trip, but that is your call.

 

I drove mine for 20,000 miles with a cv boot looking like this. I wouldn't worry about your weekend trip.
