My wife and I have been looking into leaving California and retiring somewhere, less liberal. Having passed trhough Texas many times and spent time there as a kid I;m leaning that way. Shes checking on line and looking around Sweetwater, me Tyler but we are wanting some ideas and opinions on good areas. We're looking small town, close to off roading areas and a shooting range. Foot hills, rolling hills, lakes ??? Temperature, climate? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm with Blackshirts, Fredericksburg is one of the places I'd most like to retire to. I lived in Sweetwater as a kid and its not a bad place at all. Nice community, and you cant beat the climate. I'm in east Texas now, near Tyler. It's nice here but man the humidity kills you.

It's a good thing Texas is awesome and there are areas with hills, lakes, off roading and close access to a city. You are going to want to look in the hill country. The area is west of i35 and stretches from San Antonio all the way north to i20.
I would focus more on areas around Austin. The 3 that black shirts listed are a great start. Also look at Marble Falls and Lampasses. There are also dozens of wineries in this part of the state if that makes a difference.
Sweetwater is pretty dry and flat. Is close to Abilene for shopping but it's just open west Texas terrain. Very few lakes and lake sweeteater was almost dried up a few years back.
There are also some really nice areas west of Fort Worth. Weatherford is growing very quick and some would almost consider it a suburb of Ft Worth. Check out Mineral Wells, Granbury and Grahm.
Hope this helps. A good rule of thumb is the farther east you go the more lakes there are.

We are driving back east to visit my dad this summer and wanted to look around Texas on the way back. Housing prices look good, but do hate the humidity.

Not much you can do about the humidity. My best advice is to stay away from east Texas and very far away from Houston. The areas that I mentioned would be your best bet for what you are looking for. The humidity is lower but not compared to Arizona.

The weather down here. Well Hot and hot and what else um hot.

Serious tho. Summers are hot but winters we never see snow. The three towns I named are to far south to be in tornado ally. So not to worry there.

Fredericksburg is an old german town. Great shops to walk down main street. Real beautiful place to live.

Kerrville is a nice small town with a nice river goin threw it it.

Bandera is another small town with some great shops to walk threw also. If I remember right its not as big as Fredericksburg

Hogs are all over the south and not just Texas. California has a very large population of pigs as well. They suck to deal with if you have land or live outside of the city.

Yeah I had heard about the hogs. Well if your outside of town that just gives ya something to shoot at. LOL Of course shooting at things because ya want to is different than shooting at things because ya have to.

Not sure how much of Californian you have in ya but hogs are taken with firearms of all kinds as well as dogs and stabbing them. Not really for the faint of heart but it has proven to be a good method.

Born and raised in the midwest but ended up here and have been in California for the past 30 years. My hunting has pretty much become quail and coyote. Quail for the eating and coyote to spare the cows. That and the occasional rattler, which are protected in California if you can imagine that. My folks were both born and raised in Texas so I spent alot of summers there and a couple of years ago we spent a week at Lake Palestine. Liked the people, like the kids, very respectful compared to California.

If I could pick a new part of Texas I would go between San Antonio and Houston. Not alot of bad weather, close to two major cities, close to the coast, lots of hunting, wheeling and ranges, and prices are still affordable. As much as I hate to say it; alot of the suburbs now are made up of people from Cali.

Tyler is a nice place, you don't want to go completely rural after living in California for so long. I think Tyler is a nice mix of suburban and rural, you won't like the heat here though

If your moving to Texas to get away from California don't go to Hranbury. I swear 3 out of 5 people over 40 are from California here.

My wife and I were born and raised in Texas, we still have a place on Lake Livingston to which we are going to retire to some day.
I would have to say Austin area is beautiful but very expensive real estate by Texas standards.

We live in a small town town now. Lots of farming and dairies. But do like a fair sized city reasonably close for doctors and shopping. I'm surprised so many living in Texas are from California but that would explain where all our level headed conservatives went.
