is it just me or does the tacoma not seem like a tough truck? maybe i'm comparing it to full size chevs or something but when i'm off roading it feels like every bump takes control of my steering wheel. feels clunky and loose. any comments?

Maybe it's not ideal stock, but once compenents are changed it makes it seem like it can take on the world.

I rode in both a stock FJ cruiser and a FJ with suspension upgrades.

They make these things to deal primarily with the road and some off road.

But the done up one was incredible.

yeah but it still should feel better then what it does. the full size trucks i drive are stock. shouldn't need upgrades.

Sometimes when a truck is heavy you will not notice the bumbs as much. It doesnt mean that its better or more sturdy then the lighter trucks. It just decipates it differently. A lighter truck can also hold up to more abuse because its not as much wear and tear on the similar joints.

The bump steer you feel is because the caster on the Tacoma is 2.5* as opposed to 6 or 8* on a full size. Lower caster giv es better leverage to the tires and less stress on the steering. The "loose" feeling in the steering could be the slip joint. Kinda a Tacoma trait.

Dunno about everyone else but I like the way my Tacoma handles itself out here in the desert areas, it never has any issues, handles woops well, and when the wheels come off the ground it takes its licks and keeps on going. I also have a Z71 Chevy Tahoe, mind you its an SUV, but it rides like a dream offroad and i have been able to take it anywhere, its nicer inside with leather and lazyboy style seats, but i wouldn't say its tougher, its bigger, and full size vehicles are just nice. You really can't compare full size trucks with these tacomas, now i have been in S10's, Rangers, and Frontiers, and my truck seems a nice little bit tougher then them, and i am positive if anyone here was to compare a Tundra and a Tacoma, we would probably all agree that the tundra seems tougher, cuz yeah, it has big mean V8, and the other doors and bed are further away, so you don't here the rattles when it hits, they are generally built to handle large work, so they are built that way. Dunno, just don't think its a fair comparison, I would say they are very tough for their class, but would not say that they less tough than full size trucks, just in a different class. I know i just rambled out a large nonsense reply, and sorry about that, i just don't want you to think your truck is not as good, cuz I am sure you would hate to be chillin in a rattly underpowerd s10. Sorry again for my rambling.

You can rent full sized trucks through rental agencies. Try it out and if you still hate the performence of the Tacoma, trade it, sell it and then you'll have nothing to complain about. After that, you can get on the full size forums and start a thread asking "Why did I trade my Tacoma? :("

i love the tacoma offroading, i have had a ram 1500 turbo diesel and a ford f150 fx4 both modded for offroading and i dont think they even compare to the tacoma. im sorry but the part about "feeling" everything is just a part of the ride and i think its more enjoyable. i would easily put up my tacoma against my other trucks and there isnt a comparison for me. I could see the problems stock but as soon as you put a little time effort and cash into it its amazing. and who can beat the sexy look of it!! haha

Depends on how loud the knocking is. It cant hurt to have it checked out if you think its abnormal.

I think it's hard to compare our Tacomas to trucks with longer and wider wheelbases. The handling characteristics are going to be apples and oranges. For instance,my '05 Avalanche Z71 had likely the nicest ride I've ever experienced in a truck.....I take consolation in the fact however that although my Taco's ride may be a bit harsher,I'll be enjoying that harsh ride for years after my Chev's resale has dwindled to nothing or the truck is worn out.....IMHO that's tough!

    Just my .02 CAD :)
