30k+ on kbb is probably the retail price, not the private party value. If the dealer offered you 27k and you want rid of it then I would say go for it. I think you would be hard pressed to get 27k selling it yourself, when they can get new from dealer at that price or slightly more. Someone said to ask 25-26k, as sad as it is for you to accept, that is probably what you would get private party. Good luck with your sell. From personal experience, I know what it is like to try and get out from under a vehicle that you just purchased. Four of the vehicles that I have owned were for less than 8 months. Not because they were junk, just some immature behavior on my part. After a while, you start to realize that you are still paying for vehicles that you are not even driving.

I disagree with the other posters. I just bought a Tacoma this weekend so I've been looking at prices. As you know, Tacomas hold their value very well. It might be hard to sell it because even though it's used with 20k miles on it, the private party retail is still probably gonna be up around $30k because they hold their value. And someone can buy brand new for that. I bought a 2008 OR 4x4 with 32k miles on it for $27.8 out the door. And that wasn't getting ripped off because everything else I saw in a 4x4 was at least listing price at $28k. Even other 2008s with closer to 50k miles on them. Either way you look at it you will probably have to take a few thousand dollars loss. Good luck with it.

When I bought my 2011, it was 500 cheaper than a 2010 with 17K miles CPO. The used were more expensive than new at the dealer as they have the certified used. They stilll hold the value. $28K is about right.

Do some math. How much $ would getting 5mpg more (or whatever the real world difference is from the "car" you want) save you per year. I doubt you'll save the thousands you'll lose in depreciation plus you lose some capability in said snow you've driven in. Just a thought before you trade in / sell. Glw decision.

It depends on whether you're selling it privately, to a dealership/carmax, or trading it in. If you're just looking to sell it go on Autotrader.com and look up what the market is like. If the market is around $28K then there's your ballpark price. Fortunately Tacos keep their value pretty well.

I bought my 2011 DoubleCab TRD Sport with 82 miles on it for $27,676. I realize that different areas will have different prices, but not huge differences. I have read about a lot of guys getting around the same deal that I got. The only thing I was saying is that if he wants to get rid of it quickly, then he should take the $27,000. In my case, 3-4 yr. old trucks were selling for $1,000 less than what I paid for mine, so it was a no brainer. If someone is in the market for a used vehicle and were going to pay full retail price, they would go to the dealer.

Edmunds.com has a nice "true market value (TMV)" calculator on their site. I ran yours for my nearest city, using the options I think the Sport has. Yours might be a little more or less based on your location.

That edmunds chart is way way off. Look on autotrader at what they sell for private party. Not to mention a dealer just offered $27K for my truck and that was his first offer. They make a lot of money on used vehicles. They can sell them easily for $29K-ish. Seems crazy, but some guy walks in and sees the new 2011 sticker price at $32,300 and then the salesman say, "we have this perfect used 2010 or 2011 for $29,000", it seems like a great deal. I believe they have a 2009 4x4 SR5 with more miles on it than mine for sale for $29K+. They cant keep used tacoma's on the lot.

Actually when you calculate out the fuel mileage it does pencil out for me. For example, if my truck gets 18mph because its a manual, and lets say I bought the auto that get 20mph. Just the difference in 2mpg would save me personally 40 bucks a month, $480 a year, $2400 over the "pay off" of the truck (I drive a lot). So bump that up to a car that gets say 30mph..... The savings is significant.

I think you make out better trading it in but the dealer will make it up when they price out the other car. The dealer is out to make $ pure and simple, both on your trade and the one bought afterwards.
The best method I have found in buying is sell privately then go to a dealer of find another pp sale.
Autotrader, CL, etc. show higher priced vehicles but what do they actually sell for?
A dealer has an advantage for they can take trades, then price higher & provide financing etc.
Not to mention, its going to be an end of Model Year soon so most 2011's will have more negiotiation potential to make way for the new models.
GL w/ you sale whichever you decide.
Ps. there was a website, I cannot find it now, that actually lists more useful pricing data on actual sales prices, not what the vehicle listed for. Also have found TMV pretty much spot on give or take a couple hunded.

Autotrader is how much people are asking for cars. Edmund's TMV is how much people are actually paying. Your area might have a great used market, so maybe the base price is higher and they don't discount a grand for the mileage. There could also be some lag time for the Edmunds numbers, so if used vehicle prices are going up (and last I heard they were) they could take a couple of months to catch up.

I checked Autotrader, did a search for a 4-door, gold, v6, 4wd, under 30,000 miles, 2010 or 2011 Tacoma. Zero hits in 100 miles; remove distance, two hits, both dealers advertising for about $28,900. Removed the color, found 10 in a 200 mile range, with an average advertised price of about 29,500. Negotiated prices on those trucks will probably be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars less than advertised.

If your dealer is offering you $27,000 cash (not a trade), take it and run.

To the OP, the Dealer and its highly trained staff are there to make sure they take as much money from you as possible. I'm willing to bet, the dealer's offer is only good if you buy a new car from them, at which, they won't come down much on the price of a new vehicle. As JKD said, if there offer is $27K cash, take it and move on, you won't due much better than that.

    lol @ the asking price

nk if i was in the market for one i sure wouldn't buy a used one for 1-2k difference, i'd buy a new one at invoice

sellers are dreaming on their asking prices...

I would think the dealer offered the $27K as trade-in only, and will then add a few thousand to the new vehicle's MSRP, LOL.
If that dealer offered you $27K without buying a new one --- I'd be on my way now if I were you.
It does happen, but you'd have to be pretty darn lucky to find somebody to really give you $28K for that truck, highly unlikely IMO.

OP. why dont you buy a used beater commuter? i work with a guy that paid $4k for a used TDI jetta. he is driving the hell out of it..he works near me, and drives home every weekend.

it would be difficult to take that big of a depreciation hit right at the beginning..

Im certainly not saying my truck is worth $28K or $29K or $30K. Just simply asking your thoughts based on my perimeters of a dealer who obviously wants my truck for $27000 and didnt want me to leave without selling my truck to them, and with kbb and autotrader and used trucks on the lot that are all well about $28000. Just wondering.

And like I said before, there are people out there who would walk into a dealership and see a sticker price of $32K+ on a new truck and then see the $29k on a used truck and think it was a great deal. Not everyone buys cars the same.

I paid $29,000 for my truck out the door. I called all the dealerships in Oregon until I found one that said "yes, we will sell you that truck for that price".

Check this link out. These trucks are at the dealership that wanted my truck. Notice the years and mileage and the PRICE. I certainly question how they can do this, but it is what it is and people are buying them. Those 2008 trucks for $31K are why I started this thread. I appreciate everyones imput thus far.

A used beater isn't a bad idea, definitely exploring that. The thing is about the depreciation, if i paid $29K for my truck back in november and I talked the dealer into buying it for $28K today, that means it would have only cost me a $1000 bucks to drive the truck for 8 months now(not including my daily operating expenses). Why the heck wouldn't I trade it in? This isnt my first tacoma, so i know they hold there value. And to be honest $28K seems like a lot to me. But the guys at the dealers have trucks from 2008 for $31K and their first offer to me was $27K. I wouldn't be surprised if I could squeeze closer to $28k from them?
