Type of winch? Load capacity?

Hey y'all!

Just wanting to get input on different types of winches and what y'all run for recovery purposes. I've seen the electrical vs hydraulic...

So, which is better for light recovery purposes and what's the minimum load capactiy I should go with for light off-road recovery in my double cab prerunner? I was thinking 8000lbs is enough...

 

you want to go at least double the weight of your vehicle. when i get mine i am going for a 9,000 lb winch. aRb makes a great recovery kit i am going to get also. Need a winch bumper first.

i have a warn m8000 on my 02 taco and it does more than needed

 

There is a one, forget who makes it, but is a winch and air compressor combo, it was pricey, but if you can, go for it.

 

I have had SmittyBilt XRC 8000 for three years & used it over a hundred times to pull ton's of stuff. It's cheap to $ 289.

 

Warn 9.5xp. its badass. Plus you want a winch that can pull twice your truck. Average tacoma weighs 4500lbs plus armor and people you are lookin at almost 5000lbs, i would get a 9 or 9.5 Warn

 

X2 Anything in WARN and 9-9,5 size. We had a h9500i (or something like that - it's a gazillion years old by now). Damn awesome winch!!

The 2nd gen trucks are actually above 5,000lbs (closer to 5100lbs). Here in PA, when you're over 5,000lbs that puts you in the next registration bracket and costs more money. The 1st gens are below 5,000lbs.

I have a warn m8000. When I first put it on I wanted to test it out, so I hooked it to a tree and held the brakes and it drug me without bogging down at all.

Ive always heard that you need one that pulls 1 1/2 times your weight.

 

Why? I'm new here. My question seems stupid to you, but are you all hoisting your trucks so that they dangle from trees? Why on earth do you need such a powerful winch?

I'm in need of a real answer here.

Thanks, Layne. When I get a bumper, I'll have Eric over at Relentless fab me up an aluminum one and outfit it with a lighter weight one. (I only get stuck in the snow from time to time). The bumper weighs 58 pounds. I wonder what a lightweight winch would cost and weigh... hmmm...

 

I would recommend a 8000-9500 lbs winch. With most available mounts you will need a non-integrated solenoid. The integrated ones need to be mounted feet down and most of the mounts for tacomas are feet forward (which is IMO preferable anyway).

I have an XRC 8 and have had great luck with it (although I did seal up the solenoid really well as some people have had theirs rust up inside from poor seals). I would recommend it for occasional use. I am considering the Superwinch EP9 or the Talon 9.5, but I also like the X9. Warn makes good products as well and the M8000 is very popular but I'd still rather have the Superwinch, they also have a preferable solenoid to other brands (the albright).

To accompany the winch I would suggest getting 2 3/4 shackles, a pair of leather gloves, a 3x30' strap, a tree strap, and a snatch block. http://winchline.com/

I had a Smittybilt XRC8 for over three years & did over 100 pulls with it & it Never let me down. It was cheep $$$ to. I just upgraded to a Warn XD9000 & a Ramsey 15,000. Now I just need people to go get stuck! lol

 

Based on your light needs, I would do one of the following:

1. Get a hi-lift jack and the ORK kit. no need for a new bumper, you can use it on multiple vehicles, store it in the attic/garage for the off season. Also very inexpensive.

2. Get an inexpensive winch. People seem to be happy with Smittybuilt, and you could also look at Harbor Freight (before you say boo, HF finished third in an offroad magazine torture test). It sounds like the winch is more of a convenience than needing to be a full on, i'm in the middle of nowhere about to die problem solver winch, so you don't need the rolls royce to get the job done. These budget winches should provide good service for the times you will need it.

 

Is the lack of responses a good thing? Has anyone found the M8000 to not be enough?
