Did the first oil change on my '11 V6 access cab this week. Quick, easy and CLEAN.

Milage was 2,700 and put in quaker state 5w-30, next change at 6, and at 10k I go to mobile 1 5w-30. The oil filler cap and manual both say 5w-30 dino...

Water in oil isn't a sign the oil is worn-out... 'cook' the water out and it's still good oil. It IS a sign you got problems unrelated to the oil itself though. So sure, you should look at it to tell you something is contaminating the oil and maybe change a head gasket, but that's something else. I was referring to trying to determine the oil is 'worn out'.

In terms of oil protection of moving parts diesels are no different from gasoline engines. The difference is they pick up soot from combustion blow by at 10x the rate of gas. It is that soot that turns the oil dark black and that is what I'm talking about when I say you can't look at oil color to tell you it's time to change or 'worn out'.

Anyone else suspicious about this sudden shift to recommending 10k oil changes just after Toyota had to pony up 2 years free maintenance to keep selling cars? Sounds fishy... I still change at 3K due to towing and some repeated, short trips.

    10k??? No way, man.

I will probably do 5k oil change as long as I am under "Toyota Care" and then go to 7.5k interval

I only have 1,200 on mine, but I talked to my dealer. They will change the oil at 5,000 with synthetic, per Toyota specs for my 4 cylinder engine.

I've seen my Mobil 1 oil reports in my old car after 8,000+ miles of hard, hot weather driving. I like the sound of that engine at 7,000 RPM, so I saw it often.

At 8,000 miles there was still plenty of life left in the oil, and none of the monitored oil properties or contaminants were anywhere close to the limits.

After reading your post, I couldn't help but respond. That battle you had with the Service Manager is your to win. He's not only wrong on his service guidance but needs to be fired or disiplined for his coment to you "find an Autozone and change your own oil at 5000 miles" If this is happens to be your selling dealer better yet and even if it's not I would schedule a meeting with either the general manager or better yet the owner and state what happened. I'll be willing to bet this jerk has done this before but before your meeting, call Toyota Care Customer Service 800 number and report this incident to them too. I had to fix this issue with my dealer as well and after they read the print out I brought them from Toyota Care about the revised 4 cylinder Tacoma oil change intervals from 10,000 to 5000 mile intervals, it was over. They greet me everytime with respect that a customer should get and change my oil every 5000 mile or 6 months without an issue. Of coarse, I stay prepared because the personnel turnover is high and I could run into another problem with someone else. That so called Service Manager should never speak to a customer like that. You have options, GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, there's not much to say about this.

For this particular engine, even though toyota is now putting 0W20 synthetic oil in it, the factory is still recommending the 5,000 mile service interval. If the dealer's being "sticky" firmly point out the documentation on the issue (which is linked elsewhere in this thread) and then escalate to a supervisor, and Toyota customer service.

10,000 mile oil change with full synthetic, except for the 2.7 Tacoma.Your dealer should have the documentation from Toyota. It calls for 5,000 mile change with required full synthetic. It does not say recomended,it says required.I bought a new Prius and am ok with the 10,000 mile change with it because toyota recomends that but I did not want to go 10,000 on the first oil change. In order for the dealer to get paid they give me a 10,000 mile service at 5,000 miles.at 10,000 miles I will get the 5,000 mile service which is only rotating tires. My oil change will be 5,000 - 15,000 - 25,000 - 35,000 etc.If the service manager can not work with you talk to the sales manager and tell him service sells. If they can not provide good service your next purchase will be where service is better. That may change the service managers atitude.

can't hurt, however that's a carryover/myth from many years ago... again, better to error on too often than not often enough.

They told me it has to be the milleage or 6 months, which ever comes first. I got my first 5k oil change at 6 months 1500 miles.

EPA.....BLAH,they ain't payin the bill(as usual).Change the oil when YOU want it changed!.Base stock of oils do not go bad, only the additive package does.Hmmm, they recycle oil, where is the savings....surely not to the consumer....just like Insurance Co's touting in the 80's as to how going to HMO's was going to save $$$$....didn't do a thing...still had the slackers who abuse the system....still do!.....ahhhhh,I feel better, thanks!.
