X2 not all counties have the same regulations. Some REQUIRE shotguns, I use a 270wsm for whitetail and its plenty big enough. Although I have knocked down a few with the 12 gauge. Anyway- OP a good starter rifle that won't break your budget is a savage. theyre accurate shoot well and most packages with the scope are like 3-400. Shotgun, I would have to say remington 870s are hard to beat for the money. Best of luck hunting don't get discouraged and be patient.

regardless... people on TW do the same thing when someone asks about what lift they should get. they just spout off either what they have or what they want and dont bother asking what the truck will be used for or the budget.

Personnaly I like to have a little more info from the OP before I tell him he needs a .300 win mag to go whistle pig hunting...;)

For sure you need to know what you are hunting before you can make any recommendations.

I use a 30-06 Browning BAR and .243 for deer, antelope, (hopefully an ELK)
44 Mag Colt Anaconda for bear and boar
22 cal smith and wesson semi auto handgun for bobcat and fox
and I just got a Ruger 10/22 rifle for small game as well, bobcat, fox

I also hunt with Hounds to help track the game to shoot. To me hunting with the dogs is the funnest way to hunt.

So figure what you are going to hunt and what the laws are and go get that gun first. You will find that you will end up with several guns over time. They are fun to own and shoot, even for target practice.
