I saw this story after hearing a snipit on the radio this morning. Apparently the USPS is facing some pretty tough times (like everybody else). Their volume is way down in large part to the explosion of email. They've reduced their workforce by 120k people since 2002, which I didn't realize, and they've halted new construction, frozen exec salaries, etc.
Aside: Does anybody remember when the Post Office hinted at charging postage for emails? It was years ago, and it didn't last long.
Anyway, apparently there are some people all up in arms about reducing USPS delivery to five days a week instead of six.

My question to you is... would any of you really care if you received no mail on Saturdays?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Same here. The majority of my correspondence is done over the interwebz. Frankly, the Post Office is a waste and mismanaged. For instance, if I send a letter to a town that is 15 miles away from my house, it has to first go to a hub that is an hour and a half in the other direction. It takes four days for the letter to get there. Now, if I mail the same letter to the same town from the next town over (in between my town and the receiving town) it will get there over night. Mail should be sorted by destination not origination.

This was inevitable. The sinking economy, postages rates rising, people complaining about those raising rates and not mailing. Its been a vicious cycle.

No mail on Saturday.....hell, that just means I don't have to look at another new bill until Monday! Cool with me!

Personally I like Saturday mail. There are certain times of the year that I sell stuff on eGay and it is really nice to send something on Friday and have it arrive on Saturday.

I hope if the USPS does eliminate Saturday delivery they do continue to have mail moving on the weekend.

Two or three days a week would be fine. They could rotate the delivery days like towns do trash and recycling and cut way down on the number of workers and vehicles.

I hate it when I order something online and I later find out they shipped it via USPS. It takes at leeast 10 days to get to me. If they would have shipped in UPS, I would have it in less that a week.

All I get at home in the mail is junk and my magazines. I wouldn't care if they only delivered mail 4 days a week.

I've been asking them to just bring my crap once a week but they insist on dumping it off each day. None of our important stuff comes through the postal service (except the occasional part) so I think I'd live.

    Nothing yet, brand new!
Tuesday is what I heard. I guess no Netflix on Tuesday :(
In a few years it will probably switch to movie downloads anyway.
I really dislike junk mail, it's the only other thing in my box besides movies.

i order shirts from shirtwoot alot and they ship USPS. i live in greenville sc, which is teh upper part of the state. i track my package. it starts in dallas TX. Goes to ATL Georgia. Then to GREENVILLE SC!!! Then to charlotte NC and then finally it comes back to greenville. it does this every single time i track a package. if it is in greenville, why do they send it to another state then send it back to me? it doesn't make any sense at all. Not to mention the fact that they REFUSED to deliver mail to my roommate when he use to live with another friend. the bitch mail lady kept putting notices in the mailbox saying "david clark can pick his mail up at our local branch". he asked her for his mail one day and she refused since the house did not belong to him and she said she couldn't deliver 2 peoples mail to one address (which i know is bullshit). so he went to the post office to complain and have the mail lady drop off his mail at the mailbox. he never did get mail while he lived in that house. not once. he had to go to the post office every week to pick it up

Yes, I heard this story driving to work this afternoon and they said that it would be a less busy day like Tues. or Wed. That was the news report I heard.

I'd probably be better off if they stopped bringing me mail all together.

Yeah... since posting I heard that he was suggesting Tuesday as well. Apparently that's the slowest of the 6 days the Post Office is open.

The more I think about it, I'd much rather them be closed one weekday than Saturday. I don't use the Post Office often, but when I do it's on a Saturday b/c I work.

I still vote that it wouldn't matter.

If the post office were still open on Sat. were I could go in and send out packages, I'm fine with no delivery.
