4.0L towing 22' boat question

hey guys, im strongly considering getting a second gen tacoma in the next year, either the V6 4x4 or the V6 2WD TRD off road. My only question is how easily would be able to tow a 22' boat (total weight would range around 1600-2000lbs)? I currently tow my 18' boat with my 1st gen 4cyl but i am looking to upgrade both rigs and dont want to be under powered. I think the standard towing capacity for the 4.0L is 3500lbs but can anyone give me an idea how the truck handles this weight when towing it?

you will be fine.... i tow more than that with my 2.7l.

and the tow rating is 6500lbs IIRC

 

Theres a post on here about what people tow with there trucks, and get one guy who tows bobcats and tractors, so your pretty safe!

 

i figured it would be fine but since ill be getting the truck before the boat i didnt want to end up under powered and struggling to get up to speed.

What 22' boat do you tow that only weighs 2000 pounds?

my 18 foot all aluminum pontoon boat is like 2000lbs.

but it may be a aluminum V hull boat

 

It will tow it no problem. I tow a 23' boat that is approximately 5000 lbs. and the Tacoma does great.

 

22' xpress bay boat aluminum hull. that's the range the website gave me and the 2000lbs was for boat/motor/gear/persons.

 

The boat will weigh closer to 4000 pounds ready to fish. The 2000 pounds is for boat, motor, and gear in addition to the dry weight of the boat. Either way it should tow fine.

 

I would say get the towing pkg and the 4x4 you don't want to start to slip when on a wet ramp.

 

The other option is to get a front hitch, so your rear wheels are not submerged in the water. It has the added advantage of keeping the boat in full view when lowering the trailer down the ramp.

You'll be fine, I tow my 21ft Four Winns Cuddy, approx weight 6k loaded and it does fine. You will most likely need to replace the rear leafs with something a little stronger or do some air bags. but make sure you get a sec. gen w/ the tow package.

 

I tow a 20' Bay Scout and I honestly can't even tell it's there aside from when I'm braking.

 

i pull a 21 foot checkmate loaded and the taco does fine, even up a 9% grade.

 

I pull all kinds of boats with mine and my gas mileage SUCKSSS as soon as I hook one up. It takes a little bit to get up to speed but it does the job better than most. You should definately look into stiffer springs if it doesnt have them already. I hauled an empty pontoon trailer with about 70 lbs of tongue weight and the truck squatted 1 1/4". Getting my new springs next week... I build custom aluminum boat trailers and we deliver them to Corpus Christi all the time (5hr drive) and we tandem 2 trailers down there and last time I got 12mpg Aluminum is light too.

 

I tow a 22' Boston Whaler and a 22' Catalina Sailboat and have no issues. Obviously it is going to be a bit slower from a stop, but after that I don't notice they are there.

 

wow thats pretty bad, my 70 year old mom could fairly easily wire up trailer lights. it is a simple process especially if your not wiring for electronic trailer brakes.

 

True but terrible at pulling with the rear wheels facing that way, thats like pulling a boat with a front wheel drive car

 

That's pretty big boat for a single axle trailer! In SC anything that heavy would be on a tandum.
