Any time you lose control like that it has to be a scary experience. My thoughts are with you and hope it was nothing serious. Best wishes!

It could be a whole number of things from syncope to Seizures to a diabetic emergency, Seizures present in many different way, Petit Mal seizures affect the body differently than Grand Mal Seizures. Grand Mal Seizures are the ones where the person shakes uncontrollably and lasts anywhere from a second or two to 30-40 minutes which I've personally seen. The shaking could be very severe or almost unnoticeable where there is rapid eye movement/deviation and the person just tenses up. Incontinence is also a sign someone had a seizure but the person doesn't always have one with the other. When the person comes out of it they are confused and the confusion can last minutes to hours. As for Petit Mal Seizures they are much different, the person could be talking to you and all of a sudden the person may just pause and stare off into space and will not respond for however long the seizure may last. I haven't been witness to a seizure of this type.

A syncopal episode causes the person to pass out for a number of reasons but the person usually doesn't tense up and start to shake, they usually go limp...

As far as a Dibetic emergency.....those usually don't happen all of a sudden and you would usually need some kind of intervention Glucose/glucagon/D50 to reverse it.

I am by no means a doctor or highly trained medical expert, I'm a Firefighter/Paramedic and I've been in the field for over 5 years in a large city and I've seen many of each of these problems and only a Doctor will be able to accurately tell you what is wrong which will involve an EKG, EEG, MRI, Blood work and a variety of other tests.

Best of Luck to you, hopefully everything gets figured out and you can continue on only worrying about what you are going to do to your truck!

    ^What he said.

Totally sounds like a seizure. Syncope is when you black out for a minute or two. (Sometimes a few seconds.)

All I can say that DigB didn't was if you get meds to take, take them religiously.

    Oh and...

Dr. said he was thinking it was some sort of syncope. He said when i passed out, it was sorta like when someone gets pain or being afraid of needles for instance and pass out when you see them.. He said where i ate a lot and got heart burn, a nerve in the upper part of my diaphragm caused my blood pressure to drop real fast and caused me to pass out. The EKG came back good and i'm waiting tomorrow for my echo test. Hopefully it comes back good as well. Keep me in your prayers guys! Thanks!

good buddy of mine had siezures every now and then, we had just finished playing call of duty and he was laying on the couch with his pregnant girl close by. all i see is him smack the ash tray and just start shaking like crazy, at first i was laughing because i thought he had just accidentally smacked the tray but when i noticed he was shaking really bad i knew something was wrong. His wife told me that "I think hes having a seizure" and that's when i realized it. I never seen anyone in a seizure before and had no idea what to do, so i put a spoon in his mouth to keep im from choking on his tounge and to keep him from biting it off and then called for an ambulance, also made sure he wasnt gonna fall off the couch. by time the ambulance showed up it had already been 10-15 minutes and he had not came out of the seizure and they took him to the hospital after them being there for another 10 min. his wife called me and told me that he was out of the seizure and to bring clothes for him the next day, when i arrived the next day he told me a story of how a hot nurse grabbed is junk and placed something in it so that he wouldnt piss himself or anything but at that time he was still in the seizure and his wife teased him for a hot girl grabbing his junk and him not being "there" for it.

well it was a scary thing that i experienced, OP hope all goes well and that you turn out OK prayers go with you

J/K. Best wishes, OP. Doesn't sound like a seizure to me either. Glad you're getting the heart checked out. They should check the large vessels too.

Just to add not to ridicule: DON'T put anything into the victim's mouth they will not usually bite their tongue off or swallow it, visually inspect that the airway is clear without sticking anything into it. I have been trained this way for over 15 years. Rewind almost 2 years when my 1.5. year old daughter (she is 3.5 years old now) had a febrile seizure she was vomiting and I was worried about her choking on vomit I stuck my thumb in her mouth, she then bit my thumb almost off. At one point while I was getting her dressed or covered I had her entire body held up by the bite grip she had on my thumb without realizing it. Short of the story, you will train and train but until you are deep in the situation you dont know how you will react or because of the situation may change while you are in it you do the best you can. My thumb nail grew in with a huge lump all the way out to the tip. She bit through my thumb and affected the nail..... crazy but thank god she has only had 1 other seizure since then and its only febrile which is a temperature spike which enduces the seizure to cool the body. sorry for a long thread.........

Hope all turns out well. Definitely get it checked out. I was behind a guy in an F150 last week in MD and he had some sort of seizure-like episode and he went off the road and hit a tree doing 50mph. We don't wanna see something like that happen to you!

Yeah, the doctor said it has something to do with my Vagal nerve which controls your heart rate. Not sure what caused it to drop so much but he said vagal syncope was what he thought it was.

Syncope can often look like a seizure, some people will convulse, eyes roll back, and twitch. It actually very common in syncope, its often confused with a seizure. as prehospital caregivers you guys see people after syncope, once they are awake, they probably very rarely syncopize in from of you. i have had several people pass out in front of me in the ER while doing procedures, and trust me the 1st time you see it, you think seizure.

A vaso-vagal reaction is likely the cause of the syncope here. heartburn, or full belly ( think pregnant woman vagaling ) could do it. when the vagal nerve is affected it makes your heart rate go very slow and your blood pressure to drop. the most common cause of passing out

hope it never happens again OP

Thats exactly what it was, i was trying to think of the name of the syncope and he called it vaso-vagal syncope. It was weird because nothing like that has never happen to me. So Vaso-vagal is pretty well common way to irritate the nerve and cause you to pass out?

You are very right, I don't think I have ever seen anyone vagal themselves infront of me, usually its the little old grandma or grandpa that was found on the floor of their bathroom!

OP, I'm glad its not a seizure as that would probably involve a lot more examination and also involve you possibly loosing your drivers license for a while till its figured out...

    ^^^^what they said!

My wife had a grand mal seizure about 7 years ago. 5 AM, bed was shaking, and not in a good way. I had always heard that you have to hold their tongue down so they don'w swallow it, so I am on the phone with 911, and she asked me where I was. I told her I was on the bed next to her, and had my fingers holding sown her tongue. She immediately said, "OK, first think I want to you do is get your fingers out of her mouth before she bites them off".

It was really odd, that when the EMS crew got there, the seizure had passed, and she was completely out of it. Did not know who/what/where. EMS told me that after a seizure, the brain basically re-boots. When they went to put the oxygen mask on her, she flipped out. She was throwing the big EMS folks all over the bedroom. After she came to, she told me she had a dream that someone was trying to smother her.

Sounds like you had your wits about you when you came to.

Hoping all works out for the best, and it was a 1 time occurrence.

the nerve that is affected is called the vagal nerve, it is part of the system that controls your heart rate. it can be stimulated by rubbing your sternum too hard, having a big fat belly and laying flat, having a full belly (usually pregnant ladies, not just a big meal), medications, pushing too hard to take a shit, bearing down, sudden exposure to very cold temperatures(ie falling into ice cold water, of dunking face is ice water) it can also be stimulated by pain or internally (possibly heartburn)
