I talked w/ seller, worked out a good deal on a super clean 99 TRDoffroad Tacoma. If all goes well I will be picking up this coming sunday. It doesn't have the factory locker (is this normal or do you think the seller is trying to rip guys like me off).
This is my first truck. I have always had cars.
Anyways wanted to get my Mitsubishi Lancer Evo a playmate and test my offroad side :D

Im sure I will have TONS of questions about upgrades in time. First thing that has to go is factory radio/ speakers. I am thinking some more aggressive tires/ wheels. I def want black wheels. Thinking of a lift, but im getting way ahead of myself, you guys know how that goes HA.

Looks clean! How many miles? I wonder why it doesn't have a locker since its TRD Off-Road? I was under the impression that all Tacos equipped with TRD OFF-Road package came with locker? Maybe the owner just added stickers...lol

Hrmm that is good info. I dont see the locker button on the left side of the steering wheel. Im glad you made that point. Maybe I should investigate a little more. Anything I should look for when I go see in person, to check to make sure its not a fake? Its advertised as TRD offroad package.

    It has 120k miles.

Yea i think it should too :notsure:

either way nice truck! But if its just a sticker and they are trying to rip you off an extra grand or too call em out!

Also some advice. Get a lift FIRST before tires and wheels. That way you get the right size tire instead of getting a smaller tire then wanting larger after you lift...ask me how i know lol

I don't know. I have always seen locker buttons on toyota trucks right next to dim light knob to the right of that (you see that blank area). Im trying to look up other 99's to see where their buttons are located.

Lol Not sure I wanna buy it if this guy is trying to rip me off. Could have something else hidding.

You are right... The switch under the vent is "Clutch Start Cancel" switch. The locker button should be next to the dim light knob.

Hell I wouldnt pass on the truck just because of that, its 4x4. Call the seller on it and see if you get a lover price. How much is the seller asking?

He was asking NADA which was 9650 I told him I would over 9k. We talked out 9.2, but this is w/ me under the impression this a TRD offroad package.

I would investigate as much about the TRD as you could that way you can tell if its just a sticker...

now i know nothing about TRD's...but is that sticker low? see if you can find some stock pics. either way, price is high imo for age and miles.

inspect it really well too, looks like he knows how to clean it up and make it all shiny and pretty to look past other things

THAT IS NOT A TRD! ugh, Scammers :(

All TRD tacomas came with the locker. And the button on the side could be the clutch cancel, or ECT? I have one on my truck right in the same spot, non trd.

Also, that stickr looks crooked, and sits too low.

Thanks guys. I am glad I posted this on here first. I will ask him to take to toyota dealership w/ me or find a buddy that knows toyotas like the back of his hand to check it out.

Or better yet just pass on this and move along.

Aside from Cars.com, autotrader and craigslist where else should I look

Awesome idea, if he gets nervous about it or anything about his attitude changing and being hesitant, you know something is up.

if its supposed to have lockers on it and doesnt and its something thats supposed to come on TRDs then my guess is he just put some stickers on it.

Okay guys. It maybe a super clean truck but when I talked to the guy about it today. He got very strange sounding almost like I was insulting him or something. He insisted it is a TRD that not all come w/ the button. Then started wondering if I can pay cash only not bank transferes or certified checks etc. I got the vin number, called toyota and they confirmed it is an SR5, not TRD offroad package. Lucky for me the guy did service his truck at toyota as needed.

Im going to pass as I do want a true TRD off road truck. This maybe a super clean truck but no need to lie about what it is. Selling for a premium and miss leading doesn't start me off on the right foot.
My Evo gets dirty and I hand wash her to this kind of detail all the time. Doesn't mean I dont beat on her like crazy.

    Again thanks guys.

smart calling toyota and having them confirm, i forgot how you read the vin but it tells you that info with the different packages, all the numbers mean something. good luck finding one, dont rush into anything, it was hard for me not to, but patience is a virtue.

i would still call him out saying that toyota confimed its not TRD, just to make him feel like a weiner...but thats just me

Its not that Im looking for a 1st gen. I just didnt want to take out a loan. I have 10k to spend. Figured 1st gen is where I would be.

I do know I have to have the ex cab at least (would love double but getting out of price range), and I "want" trd offroad.

Im in no hurry. I dont "need" a truck or car. I just want something fun for offroad and Toyota's motors are about as close to bomb proof as you can get

good luck with it, mine is to every detail i wanted...lol like i said 7 months, be patient you will find your truck. but when you find it you have to jump on it, mine was listed for a day before i found it, drove the next day to get it, the guy told me the next day he had 8 calls for it, the previous owner still emails me :D i think he misses his truck.

That truck is from the south as evidenced by those rims (stock option in the SE region). They came on some of the better equipped SR5s at the time. My truck has the same rims and also a "fake" TRD sticker (which I didn't put on). I honestly think some of the dealers in the SE region in the late 90's/early 2000's were putting these stickers on and selling them as off-roads (sans locker) even though they were really just sr5s. The owner probably didn't know it wasn't a real TRD offroad... so he might have thought YOU were trying to rip HIM off!

Honestly, that truck looks awesome. I'd try to get him to come down on the price a bit since it isn't a real TRD, and then have it checked out by a mechanic and if its fine I'd buy it!
