Stainless Brake Line Install Issues

I finally installed the set of "Group Buy" lines that I bought several months ago, and ran into a few small issues that I thought I'd share.

Stock length lines in my stock truck, just looking to improve the feel a bit.

The rear lines fit too loose in the brackets using the stock retaining clips, so I took some 1/2" stainless washers and opened up the holes to 16mm to take up the slack.

As delivered, the fittings on the front lines won't fit into the stock brackets. After removing .010" from the outer hex portion of the fitting, I was able to get them to fit into the brackets. I used my lathe, but if you just file down the tips of the outer hex a bit, then they'll fit.

And there's no way to securely retain the front lines using just a single stock retaining clip. I ended up using both of the stock retaining clips to secure the lines nearest the calipers, and a single thicker clip, that I happened to have, on the frame ends. I plan to purchase 4 more stock clips in order to double clip that end as well.

 

I didn't do exactly what you did, but to say the least, I almost would have rather paid a little extra money for lines that fit in like stock vice get a good deal on these, and have to jerry rig the hell out of them to fit properly. They were definately a bit of a pain.

i had mine installed by a shop but, they seem to be doing just fine.

 

FYI, The p/n for the brake line clips is 90468-A0007, $1.57 ea. at my local stealership.

Anyways, I didnt know there were any issues with those. I have mine sitting in the closet for months now. Just never got around to getting them installed. Since I dont really know how all the parts work or install, I dont understand what the issues are.




Is the circled item the brake line clip?

 

No, you can see the brake line clips doubled up in the fourth pic that I posted above and circled in red below.

 

Any noticeable difference in pedal feel?

 

I believe so, but it could be wishful thinking. However, my wife even noticed a difference.

 

A follow-up on the "feel" issue.

There is so much of an improvement, that either the factory doesn't know how to properly bleed brakes, or the stock rubber lines must be balloons. My wife still mentions it everytime she drives the truck.

And I finally got around to "double clipping" the upper end of the front lines.

 

on the group buy thread I posted my install. i rebent my retainer clips.

 

Funny i see this today. I did this over the weekend and ran into some of the same things as everyone else, except my fronts fit fine, no filing/lathing for me. I also just bent the stock clips a bit more to hold it in. Worked fine. The only other problem i faced was that for some reason on of my back lines had 2 different sized fittings. Guess he just put on the wrong one when making them. Pedal feel.. I guess its working better? Hard to say only been a day. Nothing night and day to me.

 

I dont understand what the clips are suppose to do? Shouldn't the line already be held in place by the bracket that the clips, clip onto?

 

Go take off one of your clips and you will see why they are there. They are basically springs that hold the lines on the brackets.

 

I had the same issue with the rears, had different sized fittings.

 

How long are these brake lines from end to end? Are they for stock height trucks or lifted?

 

I specified mine, told him that i had a 3"~ lift. Mine have more slack than stock in the rear, altho i did not measure them.

 

I have a 3" lift, the lines were 1" longer than OEM.

So concerning the rear lines. What do the wrong plugs look like? I'm hoping mine are fine.

Also, do you have to use those washer spacers in the rear? Or can you "double up" on the brake clips?

How many additional clips are required to complete this hack job? Are the clips standard? Or is it recommended to buy the OEM ones?

 

For the rears you could probably just bend the clips a bit (as posted above by sytfu510), I honestly didn't think of that when installing mine.

I used 4 extra clips in the front, and wanted to use stock clips, which are cheap enough IMHO.
