UltraGauge LED Swap

Ive had quite a few ppl asking me about how i swapped my UG leds from white to red and what type did i use. First off I personally didn't do the led swap I had a friend who does electronic repair do it for me. I was going to do it until i saw how tiny the leds are. If you have swapped the leds in your gauge cluster then those leds are twice the size of the ones in the UG....they are TINY!!! My friend said be very careful taking it apart, the little board that has the leds on it has to be unsoldered from the main board and be patient when soldering. The led type is smt 0806 and I think there are 5 LEDs total. To open the UG case you just pry the case open. You may break some of the tabs but it's hard not to because they are very thin. I think two of mine broke and I just super glued the case back together. If you do use super glue make sure to barely squeeze it on the edge of the case...if you put alot it may run and get on something you don't want it to like the LCD screen.

And this is how I have it mounted. The metal strap runs over the headliner and is self-tap screwed into the part that the overhead console mounts to.

Looks good, whoever tackles this next should to a write-up I just got mine couple days ago, I must say its smaller than i thought hah. I got the new EM version. Still got to customize the display options and calibrate...

Oh and whoever needs a new case if cracked/dropped its only $6 on their site.

I was thinking the same spot to mount mine! The drivers side looked better but the wire comes out on that side so it looks more clean as you have it. Any clearer pics of the strap/mounting you mention?

 

The end of the strap above the overhead console is folded over the self rapping screw...i guess for a cleaner look even though you dont see it anyway lol. The second pic shows the piece that the UG clips to with 3m double sided tape connecting it to the metal strap.

I'm having a hard time finding 0805s

 

FWIW, you can make it mount to that spot with the suction cup thing they provide with the Ultragauge. Put the suction cup behind the rear view mirror and then bend the stalk to make it sit above the rear view. That's actually how I have mine set up.

 

I probably would have used the suction cup but I have a tint strip on my windshield and have had the tint get discolored from my radar detector being on it over time

I still can't find any smt 0806 LEDs. Has anyone else attempted this? Any other LEDs we can use?
