Notching Wood

I need to cut a notch like this in a 3 inch by 3 inch piece of wood. What's the best way to accomplish this?

 

Band saw or jig saw would be what I'd use

 

skill saw and a chisle... well thats what we do on the jobsites anyway.

 

saw down both ends and chisel out the notch

 

Set circular saw to depth of notch. make a dozen or so cuts between your marks to remove as much wood as you can. Then clean it up with a chisel. Easy.

id jig it. run your blade up to the corners. then cut out the inside until you can get your blade turned sideways to cut the top line.

Im just here to show off my wood working skills by agreeing with the chisel method

 

God damn that's a long jigsaw blade to cut 3" deep

or just chisel it, takes all of 3 minutes.

 

You could use a dado blade on your table saw, would take you like 3-5 passes to cut that out CLEAN, or like the others said run your circular saw through it and chisel it out, OR if you have a really good chop saw(like i do) you can select the height of your blade to come down and run the wood back and forth and side to side and it will eat that notch out in a couple minutes.

 

I don't think he needs to cut 3" deep, just a 3" square piece of wood. Prob only 2" max he would need to cut. Still yet, jigsaw wouldn't be ideal for this, i agree with the above posters, circular saw set to the depth, make about a dozen or so cuts, hammer out the pieces, clean up with chisel.

 

If he's asking the question. I highly doubt he has a table saw, much less a dado blade for it.
