I am wondering if Toyota may one day build an electric Tacoma. If yes, when? How long will it take them to make this possible?

In this story there are 4 opinions about electric trucks and their future by truck enthusiasts.

    http://www.torquenews.com/1/would-you-buy-full-size-electric-truck

Do you think truck makers will find a way to figure out how to crank out batteries at a lower price point? This could be such a great gift for fleet managers.

I would bet they will have an electric truck in the next 10 years, but it will be sold along side the tacoma before they have an all electric tacoma... Prius T?

Judging by how Toyota has taken their sweet a$$ time to integrate some of the most basic features into the 3Gen Tacoma and what most vehicle manufacturers now consider "standard"......maybe by the 7Gen Tacoma.

I've driven an electric Ford Ranger. So much fun to drive! I hope there will be an electric Tacoma.

I would rather see a hybrid truck before an all electric one. I also think that makes a bit more sense

Isn't the Tacoma getting the same 3.5L Atkinson V6 that's in the Lexus trucks? Doesn't that engine already pair up with electric motors in Lexus vehicles? I don't see why that wouldn't be the same for the Tacoma.

One thing is clear, EV trucks would become widespread if major brands introduce it.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I could see a hybrid Tacoma coming possibly, but not full electric anytime soon. Electric cars still have a long way to go before the whole world is convinced of them. We would no longer have manual transmissions or anything like that which would suck for many. I would love a hybrid Tacoma, as long as they didn't turn it into an ugly POS Prius looking thing.

Too late...the ugly went far beyond the Prius's repulsiveness.

If you are waiting for Toyota to lead the way, you have a long one. When Toyota makes eletric trucks, everyone else will already have on on the market. Don't expect them to lead the way. Right now, teucks need fuel cell technology to catch up with eletric motors. The military is now into that stuff. Batteries can't hold enough enegy for their size and need too much time to replenesh. Fuel cells have the potential to be as efficient in refueling and as a diesel or gas trucks. As far as the motor is concerned, who would not want an electric drive motor as long as you could store the same amount of energy and refuel as quickly as now. Toyota is big into fuel cells......so there is hope.

The advantage of fuel cells for energy industry is, it allows them to keep charging the conjumer " at the pump" with a mnimal change in infrastructure vs battery power. Battery power is not good for the the powers that want control of your ca fuel as they do now.

I don't think anything can come close to the Prius ugliness. Nothing is bad as the Nissan Juke, though.

^yes, there are always people parked in the Nissan dealership charging their leafs. They always look bored, and hot in the summer, what a hassle, no thanks.

I like the idea of series hybrids for true truck use, not parallel as the Prius is. Series is not as efficient but it is much more simple and flexible.just a small diesel for generation and an electric motor Or two or four for four wheel drive, That's how skidders are made only with hydraulic motors and we all now how well they go " off road".

The Chevy Volt " says" it is series hybrid......but it isn't. It's just a Prius with a bigger battery. GM is a LSoS ( ly'n sack of s.h.i.t.). Typical of advertising. The biggest thing working against electric power cars.......is their durability and lack of need for service. There is an entire automotive industry, including the car makers that make so much money on parts and service for ICE motors, electrics are a looser for them. Fill the washer and check the tires once evry five k miles. They loose more on electrics and that's why they need govt. support or outrageous pricing.

So really, toyota is committed to hybrids which still need money making service and will only dabble in electrics with fuel cell technology and make them for the public when forced to by govt. regs...don't hold your breath.
