2011 2.7 4x4 auto

i noticed on toyotas site they are offering an auto in the 2.7 access cab, has anyone drove one? whats your thoughts?

 

Maybe they've made some improvements in 16 years, but my last truck was a 95 AC 4x4 2.7 auto, and yes it was slow.

 

i have a 2011 DC with the 2.7 and it is slow. mpg is great though.

If you get the 2.7L, get the 5speed, Auto trannys have bigger drive train loss, resulting in less power transferred to the wheels...

Meh the 2.7L when paired to the 5speed, has decent power. I have hauled full load of cut down wood in my 2.7L 5speed and it did ok, granted I had to shift higher in the rpm range to get up to speed, but it did ok thanks to the 5speed, with the auto it would be painfull...

It really depends what you are going to be doing with the truck. If you are going to be towing or hauling long distance I would get the v6. If you are getting the truck to haul smaller loads on short distances the 4banger will do.

 

Do the new 2k11 4x4 4cyl come with the diff lock?

 

I've had mine about a month now, automatic. Underpowered going up mountains but love it other than that. Great mpg, good price. However, I don't do any towing, heavy hauling.

 

Not to disrespect anyone else’s decision on a 2.7, 4X4, auto. I placed an order for a 2011 2.7, 4X4, auto, when they became available in August. After thinking more about it and having had 1st generation Tacoma’s with V6’s in relation to my present 2.7, 4X2, auto, I cancelled the order. Albuquerque is about 5,000 feet in elevation and I plan to stay in mountain states. HP is lost the higher you go.

I was disappointed Toyota did not put the updated V6 in the Tacoma for 2011 and the 2.7, 4X4, auto, was a second choice. So I will most likely continue to wait for an improved V6 for better mileage in a midsize truck unless I run out of patience.

 

If they would have had this option when I bought my '09 I would have got one. I wanted the 2.7 and I also wanted an auto. But then I don't live in the mountains or tow anything heavy AND according to my wife I drive like a grandpa so the auto 4 banger has plenty of power for me

 

going to be getting a new reg/cab 4/4 2.7 auto soon what should i expect for highway miles? putting on a leer hard cover, unloaded commuter.

The 2.7, 4WD, auto is estimated at 18/21 with the 4:10 differential. I get 21/22 around town with the 2.7, 2WD, auto with a 3:58 differential.

Another characteristic to consider about this truck is the 4X4 regular cab weighs 450 pounds more than the regular cab 2WD auto. And that is with the same engine. The only thing I know being different in the driveline are the differential ratios. I don’t know if they changed any transmission ratios.

 

I had a 09 4x4 2.7 Access Cab with a 5 speed for over a year, and I loved it. The 2.7 is pretty much a zero maintenance engine that will last a million miles. Decent fuel economy, decent power when not loaded, but will tow and haul a decent load when you need. A great commuter truck or light duty work truck. But I do enjoy my V6 TRD a bit more.

 

As has been discussed on this site before there is a difference when you couple a 2.7 to a standard five speed than the automatic. Actually any trucks I have encountered with a four cylinder give better performance with a standard shift. Now we are talking 4X4 with an auto and another 450 pounds.

For 2011 in the 4X4 Reg. Cab when you get the standard it comes with a bench seat, no SR5 package on either auto or standard and they dropped the PreRunner Reg. Cab.

 

also for some reason the mpg is better on the highway with the auto over the manual per Toyota's website.

 

Most vehicles now days that offer a manual and an auto seem to be rated at higher MPG with the auto. I really like my 2.7 auto access cab, I am just mad that they NOW offer a 2.7 auto D-Cab. I would have bought that had it been available. The main reason I wanted a 2.7 was the low maintenance and bullet proof reputation.

 

I don't care what Toyota's website says, manual transmissions get better mileage when people who know what they are doing are behind the wheel. You control your shift points, and it is much easier to coast.

 

The gearing is different IIRC, and that plays a part in the mileage.

 

I still don't understand why the ratings for the Manual would change between 2010 and 2011. I have no problem getting the 17/22 rating.

 

I have a 2011 reg cab 4x4 auto and just returned from a 2500 mile trip from Northern Calif to Colorado Springs. The only issue I had with the auto trans was deciding to climb mountain passes on the hwy at 60mph or 75mph. Transmission would maintain 3rd gear if you went faster but would drop into 4th if you didn't push it. I averaged 75mph and had two tank fulls that returned 22mpg. Average was only 20mpg.

 

Anybody else have experience with the 2.7 4x4 auto. I'm interested in hearing differences between this and the manual.
